The Treaty of Versailles was one main reason of World War II. It was a poorly written treaty which resulted in both the winning and losing sides to suffer from the war. During the 1930s, many politicians in both Britain and France came to see that the terms of the Treaty of Versailles had placed restrictions on Germany that were unfair.28 Hitler’s actions were seen as understandable and justifiable.29 When Germany began rearming in 1934, many politicians felt that Germany had a right to re-arm in order to protect herself.30 It was also argued that a stronger Germany would prevent the spread of Communism to the west.31 In 1936, Hitler argued that because France had signed a new treaty with Russia, Germany was under threat from both countries and it was essential to German security that troops were stationed in the Rhineland.32 France was not strong enough to fight Germany without British help and Britain was not prepared to go to war at this point.33 Furthermore, many believed that since the Rhineland was a part of Germany it was reasonable that German troops should be stationed there.34 England pursued a determined effort to avoid war.35 They hoped that by meeting hitler's demands he would be satisfied and there wouldn't be any war.36 This played into Hitler's plans because he used every concession to prepare the stage for his next demand. 37 This caused the policy of appeasement backfired.38 It not only made Hitler bolder, but it also gave him time to build up his army.39 The failure of appeasement led to the final straw being drawn when Hitler invaded Poland on 1 September and Britain and France declared war on Germany two days
