One of the main plots in American Born Chinese is racial stereotypes. The main example of stereotypes is Jin Wang. He is expected to be good at every subject because he is Chinese. Also when he was made fun of him because how he would speak. But Jin Wang was not the only one who should stereotypes. The Monkey King was not allowed at the party because he was a Monkey just as many minority races/ethnicities were rejected because they were different. As seen when Wei-Chen
moved to Chinatown he was made fun of because he was not custom to America.
The second plot is the transformation some characters go through in the story. For example, at the beginning of the story the Monkey King is arrogant and stubborn, but he transforms into a peaceful and understanding monkey. Jin Wang is transformed into the all American boy Danny. The Monkey King transforms into Danny's cousin Chin-kee in order to get Wei-Chen to accept his true identity. Wei-Chen has also transformed into a angry asian- American wannabe gangster.
The final plot is accepting yourself. At the end the Monkey King came to term that even though he is a master of kung fu he is still a monkey. Jin Wang also lets go of his alter ego Danny and accepts that he is Chinese. Then there is Wei-Chen he finally accepts that he can't disguise that he is a monkey and that he is also a follower.
