The story of David, a biblical hero who triumphed over his enemy under extraordinary circumstances, is very inspiring and has been the subject of numerous works of art. Statues, paintings, frescoes and all forms of literature have explored the heroism and youthful courage that David embodied as he faced the Philistine giant, Goliath
The three statues of David by Donatello, Michelangelo and Bernini represent the beginning, height and end of Italian renaissance as well as the drastically different interpretations of the character, may it be the physique, the action, the age or any other detail. Michelangelo left the palace to study anatomy at this time. He returned when lorenzo’s succesor, Piero de Medici invited him back. This is when Michelangelo started working on larger marble Pieces. In 1494, Piero had promised the French that he would help them occupy the city of Naples, but the French armies also occupie Florence. Michelangelo had left Florence a month before their arrival and moved rist to venice and then to bologna. In Florence an angry Florentine mob drove the Medici leaders into exile and then declared a republic. Michelangelo then returned to florence where he was comissioned to make a fighure of St. John the Baptist, and the in 1496 he completed a commission for a Cupid figure which was bought by Cardinal Riario of San Giorgio. He is know for perfecting the baroque style of sculpture and developed it to such an extent that other artists are of only minor importance in the discussion of baroque sculpture.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini was born in Naples, Italy in 1598. His father Pietro Bernini was a Mannerist sculptor who moved from Florence to Naples. As a young boy, Bernini would tag along with his father and would observe him working on his projects. He soon aquired an intense liking and skill to sculpting. This a caught the attention of a painter named Annibale Carracci and Pope Paul II.
Due to these connections he soon gaine the patronage of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, who helped him become one of the most famous and important sculptors of his time. Under the Cardinal’s patronge, Bernini sculpted The Goat Amalthea with infant Zeus and a faun, the Blessed Soul and the Damned Soul. At 22, he made the bust of Pope Paul V and then went on to make numerous sulptures for the Borghese
