The Tummy-Ache Debate
Abstract
A woman complains of abdominal pain and is rushed to the hospital. After an examination, the physician informs the woman that she needs a kidney transplant. However, based on the managed care organization’s utilization management review, a nurse practitioner decides to deny the procedure for this patient. The woman eventually dies as a result of not having the transplant.

In many hospitals and/or health care organizations today, persons coming into an emergency department will not be refused treatment. The statute which protects individuals requiring medical treatment from an emergency room will be provided care no matter their financial standing or if they have health care coverage is called the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA, 2013). However, the scenario does not mention what department in the hospital the woman goes to. Mitigate risk means to come up with a type of strategy this is an approach to minimize the occurrence of any risk that may occur. Risk mitigation is planning, implementing, and progress monitoring. Risk management is based on a mixture of probability, occurrence and severity of the risk. Risk mitigation assumes and accepts the existence of risk and makes decisions on the risk at hand. Try to find ways to avoid or eliminate risk by making adjustments in the way schedules, procedures technical requirements etc. By controlling the situation risk management can implement actions that will decrease in risk. Risk management can transfer or reassign the accountability, responsibility, and authority to someone else that is willing to take responsibility of the risk. Watching and Monitoring the risk that may have had impacted on the risk.
Mitigation of risk in healthcare is to protect patients, employees and visitors it has become an emergent way of quality care. “Its practice entails coordinated and systematic measures taken by the hospital to ensure healthy outcomes.
