The Value of Tenacity

Throughout my entire life, I have lived with purpose. I have always had a desire to succeed, and along with that desire, I have had the confidence to persevere. This is not to say that I have not had my downfalls or failures in this lifetime, but it is rather to say that I have used those losses as a tool to learn how to better myself. As far as working extremely hard to reach a goal, there is one example that sticks out among the rest. When I was first employed at Saltgrass Steak House, I was hired for the new concept in Oklahoma City. I had never opened a new restaurant before; it brings about a multitude of opportunities that one wouldn’t get the chance to have from a place that is already established. Saltgrass is the kind of restaurant that believes in and achieves superior service. It was extremely important to me that I did well here, and I made it my top priority and goal to become the top trainer at this particular location. Saltgrass has a rankings system based off of merit rather than seniority. As all of those hired were brand new to this restaurant, everyone had an equal chance to become trainers. Because of my hard work and commitment to Saltgrass, I was a part of the first training team at that location; however, I was not the leader of the training team. Looking back, I think that putting me in the middle of the pack gave me the greatest motivation I had ever experienced in my life. I wanted to lead the team to create a working environment in which the servers were well-taught and well-prepared for anything that came their way. I wanted to be the one who conducted trainer meetings to ensure that everyone was on the same page and training employees in the correct manner. In order to achieve this goal, I had to work my way up by helping out the restaurant as a whole. I had to make sure that when a trainee went through training, I was giving them all the

In life, to successfully move forward I need to establish goals. “The tragedy in life is not reaching your goal, but having no goal to reach” (Leadership for Student Activities, 2005). I must have a plan of how I will achieve my goals and be able to identify when an important element of that goal is reached. Possible setbacks must be considered and purposeful schemes arranged for when the unexpected shows up. According to Deci and Ryan (1984), “Goals, whether trivial, routine, significant or life altering, are part of peoples everyday lives”.…

In the article, “The Winning Edge,” the author, Peter Doskoch, explains the reasons to persevere. When you start something, don’t stop until you reach success. Thomas Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” (Doskoch, Pg. 161, Paragraph 3). Being successful doesn’t pay off if it’s easy. Some will give up because “it’s too hard.” Isn’t that where the joy of success comes from? If it’s easy, it’s not worth it. You also have to realize that nobody is perfect, no matter how hard they try to be. “The Winning Edge,” tells us how there is always more room for improvement. We are all human, and it is natural for us to make a couple mistakes here and there. The important thing is that we learn from our mistakes. Another point that “The Winning Edge” points out is that we should all learn to like what we do. When we make a crappy mistake and take a wrong turn in our lives, make the most out of it. Doskoch mentions that “Perseverance...can itself foster…

Hard work and perseverance is something a number of people are taught at a young age. Suzanne Lucas, a woman who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, has this to say about working hard, “Some people pat themselves on the back when they do as little work as possible. While this provides temporary fun, it won’t help towards real success.” No matter what someone’s job is, if they put in their hardest work…
