The Values Of Determination And Mysterious Partridge Dog

Two values present in this story are determination and honesty. Danny shows determination when Ross Pickett, his father, wants to make Red a varmint dog. However, Danny had just talked to Mr. Haggins, Red’s owner, about dog shows. Danny learns that if a competitor wins, it is one mark that proves to the first owner of an Irish setter that they succeeded. This puts Danny to thinking about dog shows, Irish setters, and mainly Red. He feels that Red was born and made to be a partridge dog and he should train him to be likewise. Danny is determined to make Ross understand his feelings. In order to do this, Danny trains Red every day during the partridge season to make him a professional partridge dog. After the season is over, Danny knows that his prediction was right because Red became an exceptional partridge dog.
Danny and Red go out to look for him and suddenly Red stops. When Danny halts to find what was found, he finds Ross, but then recognizes the real reason Red stopped; he had pointed out the partridges Ross had shot and put in his pocket. Danny also shows determination when Ross and Mr. Haggins want a massive bear called Old Majesty killed. Danny and Ross have been gunning him for years, but have never killed or injured him. One day, Danny is out with Red and they come across Old Majesty. In order to protect Danny, Red bays the bear and brings him to a standstill, becoming the first dog with the courage and wit to do so. After this first meeting, Danny is determined to kill Old Majesty using Red. His determination increases when Ross, the hounds, and the cow are hurt by him. Danny takes Red to find Old Majesty and kills him using strategy and only then he is satisfied. This is how determination is portrayed in this
