The Vanna Venturi House

The exterior of the house is simple and looks like a house, and it is connected to the interior. For some elements outside of the house like the chimney, it is easy to tell where it is located. It’s usually on either sides of the house, but in the Vanna Venturi House’s case it is in the middle. There are different sizes of windows placed in the house, which are designed instead of having repetitive shapes of windows. Robert Venturi used the invention of having those asymmetrical windows randomly in the house, not like any other house, that would have a window on one side and the same exact one on the other side. Another interesting element to look at is the cut outside the house from the top all the way until the second floor; the empty space
doesn’t get to the first floor. “You always see something new, like the way the sunlight filters through the new-fallen snow in an upstairs window arch." (Boulton, Alexander O.) Artistically, the bedroom in between the space would get natural light from a specific place that Robert Venturi was looking for. The facade in the front of the house is so attractive, since there is an incomplete arch; it was signified as the height of the entrance. The back of the house was looking very different in comparison to the front; they don't relate to one another. In most houses, there are some connections between the front and the back of the house, but the architectural form in the Vanna Venturi House shows a new design of the overall picture of the house. “Venturi made his ideas seem reasonable and accessible. He began the book with a chapter entitled ‘Nonstraightforward Architecture’” (Friedman 199). The new design, that Robert Venturi did, could be interpreted with many different themes, which shows the complexity of architecture in the building.
