The Vision of Young Goodman Brown The vision that Young Goodman Brown sees at the ritual in the forest can be seen as rather disturbing and ungodly. The vision he has in the forest completely changed the way he saw everyone around him and the world its self. The main part of the story starts off with his wife telling him not to go on this journey because she fears that something bad could happen and that she gets scared when she has to stay by herself. We later find out in the story that it would have been wise for Young Goodman Brown to listen to her and stay home, at least for the night. In this story, Young Goodman Brown is faced with several devilish things and despite how hard he tries to resist these things, he cannot, and he is changed forever. As he just begins his journey down the path, he is met by someone he calls a “fellow traveler” and he convinces him to go down a path that wasn’t even certain he wanted
It starts out with him walking down the path where he meets a “fellow traveler”. Nothing seems too alarming about this man other than the staff that he carries, which is carved in the shape of a snake. The staff appears so real that it almost seems to move. The man offers him the staff to help him on his journey, however, Goodman Brown refuses. They walk on a little further, but Goodman Brown thinks that he should return home because he says his family has never walked this path, so he thinks he shouldn’t either. Despite the man saying that he knew Goodman Brown’s father, grandfather, other important town’s people, and Christian men and women were all a part of the community. Goodman Brown wonders how he can face minister after partaking in the community by seems to mindlessly walk on even though he says he doesn’t want to be a part of the wickedness.
