The Way We Dew Character Analysis
The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe, Response Journal #1, pp. 1-159

Question - Possible themes and issues: survival, sacrifices, power, reality vs. appearances, pain, and inner conflict. Which character do you relate to the most and why? Which character is your complete opposite and why?
Megan Crewe’s The Way We Fall is set in a geographically isolated island in Canada that has about a handful of citizens in it who are plagued with a mutated virus. The virus ‘starts with an itch you just can’t shake’ (book jacket). It is usually followed by the victim ‘blabbing [their] secrets and chatting with strangers like they’re old friends. Three more [days], and the paranoid hallucinations kick in. Then you’re dead’ (book jacket). I feel that this story revolves around survival and an obvious issue of reality. Everyone knows that

Meredith is young, seven years old and is a naïve little girl with a large sense of hope. She tries to look for the positive side to any negative situation, which is something I tend to do a lot. She has a child-like innocence that makes her who she is. Everyone is trying to keep Meredith’s innocence intact, particularly Kaelyn, the protagonist, who made it her sole purpose to keep her safe because it was ‘the only thing [she knew] for sure was right’ (90). A character I feel I relate to the least is Quentin. The way he would act, or the way he always ‘sauntered’ (104) towards others in an intimidating fashion. He is selfish, taking the supplies shipped in for himself and his group while stealing from stores. He would ‘[go] off on how the government [is] not helping [them] enough’ (104) before turning a cheek on everyone to go ‘[do] something ten times more selfish’ (104). I do not empathize or relate with this character in any way considering how he would just leave everyone that ever cared for him in the dust when he sees an opportunity that benefits only

Feeling sorry for someone, but not agreeing with them. As humans we have all felt this feeling at least once in our lifetime. In the book The Awakening, by “Kate Chopin” Kate Chopin sympathizes with the main character Edna but doesn’t pity her. I agree with Kate, because even though she’s married with Leonce a man that she doesn't love and has children with him, she is still free not attached to him at all. Another reason I agree with Kate is that she doesn’t pity Edna. She spends time and loves Robert rather than loving her own husband.…

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive (Dalai Lama.) Grant has a battle between love and hate. Having to go back to something that he isn’t, being treated somewhat like a slave, and making the ones around him happy. He must overcome his ego and fight for something he believes in. This is a difficult task because he isn’t completely sure what he believes, or who he is yet. His mission, to affirm that Jefferson is not a hog, but a man, and this milieu, manhood, is not only subversive but also fought over throughout the book A Lesson Before Dying.…

A Lesson before Dying is a memorable novel, set in Bayone, Louisiana in the 1940’s, about an uneducated, illiterate black man, Jefferson, who is falsely accused of murder and sentenced to death. While on trial, his defense attorney likened him to a hog, calling him nothing more than a fool and a cornered animal. Jefferson’s godmother wants him to become a man before he dies. She persuades two men, Grant Wiggins and Reverend Ambrose, to visit with Jefferson and teach him what it means to be a man. While both men desire the same outcome, they disagree about what it means to be an educated man. Grant believes that his college degree gives him all the knowledge he needs. However, Reverend Ambrose…

We have all had those things that appear in our lives and for awhile bring us joy. Just for a little bit. Or maybe it’s the things we wish for, wait the longest for, and once we get it it’s not what we thought it’d be. The most popular of these things would be money. We all think that getting money would make our lives a lot easier, less stressful, and the biggest misconception, happier. But, in the short story “Why, You Reckon?” Langston Hughes uses irony, dialogue and character development to show the audience that money can’t buy you happiness.…

Draper’s out of my mind and Palacio’s Wonder both provide stories where the reader can easily become filled with sympathy and pity for their main characters who struggle with some type of disability. I found myself initially feeling sorry for, not pity, for these characters from the beginning of each novel as I was drawn into Melody’s tornado explosions from frustration (Draper 17), and August’s entrance into this life with his “small anomalies” causing the doctor to faint and the nurse to act hysterically (Palacio 6-7). While both of these characters experience daily episodes of what I would consider trauma, I do not see the as victims of trauma as neither of them allow these ordeals to define them, nor…
