The Ways Juliet Changes in Romeo and Juliet
English Prep Explore the ways in which Juliet changes in the Play Will Allen

Juliet changes a vast amount during the play. In this essay I am going to explore the following points:

1. How her maturity level changes. 2. How she obeys her parents at the beginning and then disobeys them at the end. 3. How her perception of Romeo changes through out the play.

1. The way in which her maturity level changes is extreme. In the 3rd scene in act 1 it shows how young she is (13) as she has not even thought of the idea of marriage. She says” It is an honour that I dream not of.” Meaning she has not thought about marriage yet. While she is doing this Romeo is still in deep sorrow about the fact that Rosaline does not love him but he loves her. These 2 points show the difference in age and maturity already as she is not having much to do with boys but Romeo is already chasing girls. A fact that is shocking to any modern day person is that she is only 13 at the beginning of the play and she is being asked about marriage. This shows the time that the play is set in as it is normal to get married at this age. Lady Capulet says, “ Thou knowest my daughter’s of a pretty age” in Act 1 scene 3. Juliet also says that she will think about the idea of marriage which links onto my next point. Another thing that shows how young she is that even though she has never met Romeo before she immediately falls in love with her. This shows her immaturity. Modern day people talk about teenage love and how it is so unlikely to last and how teenagers will fall in love at first sight but never really make a relationship last. Well this is an example of that but in those days if you loved each other you would get married. The way she is only around 1 day into her relationship and is getting married shows how venerable she is which is another factor adding to her maturity level. Another factor about her maturity level is that she develops from someone who takes no risks to taking

Juliet’s personality and character is one of the most obvious and significant element that has been recontextualised. In Shakespeare’s play, Juliet is described to be more than just a pretty face; she’s smart, witty, determined and mature. She knows what she wants, and she gets it as it is Juliet who proposes to Romeo not the other way around. In the text, she is written to be thirteen years of age and begins the play as a naïve child who has thought little about love and marriage, but she grows up quickly upon falling in love with Romeo. Being a girl from a high social class family, she has none of the freedom Romeo has to roam around the city or climb over walls at midnight. However she shows amazing courage in trusting her life and future to Romeo, refusing to believe the worst reports about him and even willing to shut important people out of her life (nurse) the moment they turn against Romeo. "And when I shall die, take him and cut him up in little stars, and he will make the face of heaven so fine that the entire world will fall in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun." Juliet’s role in society is very minor and simple. She is the pretty, ‘prized’ daughter of the Capulets and is expected to be obedient of men in their families. In the novel, she receives little guidance and help from her family and is expected to marry Paris as her father decided. This gives a clear example of women’s role and its unimportance.…

October 16th was the opening night for a Carroll production of Romeo and Juliet. Many familiar faces around Carroll are involved with the shakespearian production and everything seems to be going smoothly. On Thursday night (the 15th), a dress rehearsal was given to an open audience and was very well received with seemingly everything going according to plan. However, behind the show are some interesting characters as well.…

Context has been a major faction contributing to the way Romeo and Juliet was written. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Baz Luhrmann produced a Romeo and Juliet with a modern context rather than an Elizabethan context. Context has influenced the language and representation of ideas throughout Romeo and Juliet, notably with the themes: Loyalty Vs. Disloyalty, Power and inequality. These themes have changed the way Romeo and Juliet was written and put them into a different context.…

Romeo and Juliet is a story about two lovers, and the forces that keep them from that love. In the story, Friar acts as a reoccurring figure for advice to the two lovers, however, his advice and actions did not prove worthy. Friar married the two lovers, gave Juliet the sleeping potion that lead to her, Paris, and Romeo's death, and despite faking her death with the sleeping potion he waited until the final day of the potions lifespan to inform Romeo; because of his late delivery, the letter never reached Romeo. Friar married Romeo and Juliet which made them fall into a deeper love than before, affecting how both acted towards others. This change is seen easily by how Romeo responds to Tybalt in Act III, Scene I, as Romeo states that his love for Juliet made him effeminate, and because of Romeo's attitude Tybalt fights Mercutio alone and Mercutio dies.…

After Romeo got banished for killing Tybalt, who killed Mercutio (the prince’s relative). Juliet’s parents, Capulet, and Lady Capulet forced Juliet to marry Paris, but Juliet and Romeo were already married. So, Juliet made an excuse to meet Friar Laurence, after meeting him. They made a plan to stop the marriage by giving Juliet a sleeping potion that made her seem like she’s dead, and after she takes it, they would hold a funeral for her. Then, they would put her in the tomb, after that Romeo would receive a letter from the Friar, saying that Juliet is alive and is pretending to be dead, and he should go get her from her tomb and run away to Mantua with her. The next day, the nurse found Juliet “dead”, the Capulet changed everything to hold a funeral, at the same time Friar sends…

In Romeo and Juliet, the maturity level between Romeo and Juliet differs drastically despite their age difference because of the way Juliet thinks through any decision she is going to make and the way Romeo makes careless and irresponsible decisions. First, Juliet's higher level of maturity is expressed through the way she thinks through the consequences of any decision before she makes it. For example, when Juliet is talking to herself on the balcony without knowing Romeo could hear her, she says," O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?/ Deny thy father and refuse thy name"(II.ii.26). After Juliet meets Romeo for the first time and realizes that she really likes him, Juliet thinks through what would happen if she actually got into a relationship with Romeo. Juliet realizes that their families being arch rivals is a huge problem and tries to come up with a solution for this which contradicts the way Romeo makes his decisions. Next, Romeo's careless and irresponsible decisions show his level of maturity. For instance, when Juliet tells Romeo that her family will kill him if they find out he is here, Romeo says," Alack, there lies more peril in thine eye/ Than twenty of their swords: look thou but sweet"(II.ii.27). Even though Romeo knows it's not safe to stay in the Capulets' house any longer, he decides he doesn't want to leave Juliet and stays. Romeo does not think through the consequences of this decision and makes an irresponsible decision which differs from how Juliet makes her decisions. The way Romeo and Juliet make their decisions clearly shows that Juliet is more mature than Romeo despite their age difference. Throughout Act II, Romeo and Juliet have different priorities and concerns which shows the difference in their level of maturity, even with the difference in their age.…

Has there ever been a time in your life when something life changing happened and your whole perspective on everything changed? Would you try to believe what you believed before or would you try to change your outlook on things? In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Juliet starts off at the beginning of the play being loyal to her family and the nurse. She wants advice from older people with more life experience, but towards the end she doesn’t care what they say, she just wants to do the things she feels are right, like going behind her family’s back and marrying Romeo. She doesn’t think about the consequences that her actions will bring.…

The maturity of Romeo grows when he goes through experiences in the play. At the beginning of the play Romeo acts like a child when he was obsessed with Rosaline. He was depressed because she did not like him, when he said, “Griefs of mine own lie heavy in my breast”(Act 1, Scene 1, Line 175). Then when Romeo met Juliet his attitude improved(Act 1, Scene 5). That showed that he was becoming more of an adult since he was getting over Rosaline. The last example that shows that Romeo matured throughout the play was when Paris said, “O, I am slain! If thou be merciful, Open the tomb, lay me with Juliet”. Romeo laid Paris…

Can a person change their destiny? Yes just for one little thing someone's destiny can change. Shakespeare says you can change your destiny by bad luck or making wrong decisions. Also, he makes a lot of good decisions in the play, and they provide a lot of details of their decisions. Shakespeare uses the play for many of his descriptions of how he thinks of people's destiny and how it changes so quickly from just a little change.…

In Act two, Scene two, Juliet proclaims to Romeo, “A thousand times good night!” Romeo then responds to Juliet by saying, “A thousand times the worse to want thy light.” Both Romeo and Juliet clearly want the night more than the day in order to keep their passionate love a secret. This is seen when Romeo responds to Juliet, “A thousand times the worse to want thy light.” These lines, with the light and dark contrast, heighten the elements of danger and safety because the night is what protects their secret love, whereas the daylight threatens to reveal it. If someone were to see them together and in love, they could easily be forced apart by their respective families and never see each other again.…

Romeo and Juliet is a play of love and hatred. In the centre of it all is Juliet, barely fourteen and still reliant on her wet nurse, yet willing to take her own life then to live without the one she loves. In the short four days, in which the play takes place, Juliet faces more than most in a lifetime. She is forced into marriage, she secretly marries an enemy of her house, her new husband kills her cousin and is exiled only allowing her one night of wedded bliss. She has to pretend to kill herself only to find her husband dead beside her, after which she takes her own life. During this emotional rollercoaster Juliet changes from an innocent, naïve thirteen-year-old to a defiant and independent young heroine. I have chosen Act 1 Scene 3, Act 3 Scene 5 (lines 69-242), and her soliloquy in Act 4 Scene 4 to compare, as they show different stages of Juliet's change in character.…
