The Windigo is a spirit used to scare children. Often, parents would tell their children not to stay out too late or the windigo would get them, and stuff like that. The Windigo in Three Day Road can relate to a few things...such as the war itself; the war could/has the capability of stealing the soul of civilized men, making them monsters. You could relate this one to Elijah, seeing as he is the one who becomes consumed by the morphine and becomes completely bloodthirsty. The Windigo could also propose a threat to Xavier, since he is basically dying through the novel. You could say the Windigo is literally eating him alive, making him miserable and making him suffer for having left his home, killing many men and so on
