Rational choice theory
This theory settles on a practical belief that man is an actor who reasons contemplates on benefits, means, costs and ends then makes a rational choice. Man has a sense comprehensible rationale of free will, where he evaluates the risks and benefits for committing a crime.
From the excerpts from the film (season1), we see a night setting, where Omar and the gang are getting ready to steal money/drugs from one of the sights in Barksdale. The following day Omar and his gang try to execute the plan. These scenes clearly explain rational choice theory, where individuals are considered prospective criminals who take part in a crime provided they can get away with it.
Theory of differential association ( Social Learning theory)
This theory explains that crime is learned like any other kind of behavior. As an individual interacts with others, they learn morals, attitudes mastery and intentions for engaging in criminal behavior. Crime mastery becomes more complex with time.
In this film excerpt, Chris and Snoops (hardcore and merciless gang members) are in pursuit naïve Mike. In the end, we realize that the hot pursuit is a task for mike, where he proves his knowledge for an effective gun fight. Chris and Snoops serve as experienced teachers, with very strong affiliation to mike. Again mike shows that he is learning the key aspects in shooting targets. (Aiming, and firing from a distance). At the end of the scene, Snoops smiles, thus portraying his criminal behaviors and mike’s new proficiency.
Strain theory
It explains that crime within a society may result from social structures that pressure its inhabitants. Most people have same ambitions but not openings and prowess. When they fail to attain expectations of society through accepted means, they may turn to crime as a means of achieving success.
