The second most suspenseful story I believe is The Monkey’s Paw. I believe this suspense story deserves the second place title because this story, much like The Tell-Tale Heart, paired fear and horror with the suspense. In The Monkey’s Paw, the author uses the fear of being buried alive, which I think is another interesting way to create dread in your reader, this helps the suspense flow a little smoother, because now your reader is worried and just has to know what happens to the character. I love that this suspense story used classic suspense, the suspense was how you would expect suspense to be; the beginning was a dark and stormy night and the characters were living their normal lives until someone showed up knocking at the door. One of…
Have you ever woken up sleep-deprived after a long night of reading an intriguing story? I definitely have. The reason these stories are such page-turners is because of the author’s excellent use of literary devices. Writers often use literary devices in their work in order to make a story more alluring and thought-provoking rather than languid and mundane.…
I walked into a pitch dark room. I couldn’t even see my hand in front of my face. When, I walked in a tiny bit. I just didn’t know what to do now. I couldn’t see anything around me.…
In WW Jacobs’ story, “The Monkey’s Paw,” In “The Monkey’s Paw,” the story is about the magical talisman, the monkey The monkey’s paw grants the owner three wishes. Although not knowing each wish comes with consequences that can lead to tragic events. Jacobs' craft is revealing. I say it's revealing because there are many different scenes and surprises in this story that would have to be revealed later in the story.…
I remember one time I was talking with my friend about what we would wish for if we had 3 wishes. I said “I wish I would get $1,000,000!” and then he started talking about how horrible it would be if there were consequences. Which got me thinking, “If I got $1,000,000 through a wish with a horrible consequence it would probably be that someone stole that money from a bank and threw it in my car or people in my family died.”…
Imagine you could wish for your heart's desire. It could be anything you wanted. However, someone would have to die for your wish to come true. Remember, be careful of what you wish for; the consequences may be horrific. The idea of fate and symbolism, when mixed together, can make a lethal pair. Dahl and Jacobs use fate and symbolism to paint an effective picture of death. The idea of fate is used in both "The Monkey's Paw" and Lamb to the Slaughter.…
Foreshadowing is a technique that authors use to drop hints or clues about what will happen later, thereby helping to build suspense and prepare readers for the outcome.…
In W.W. Jacobs, “The Monkey’s Paw,” he uses foreshadowing to form tension throughout the story, serving to alert the reader that misfortune may lay ahead. For instance, the setting introduced a house at the end of the street and a cold, windy, rainy weather; creating a scary and apprehensive feeling towards the reader. Jacobs uses subtle hints to implement situational irony and foreshadowing to heighten the suspense of the story, and make the reader at the edge of their seat.…
Monkey’s Paw is a tale that is known worldwide for a genre that was not popular at the time of its creation. I asked my mom if she ever heard of the Monkey’s Paw, and she told me to tell her the story because she thought it sounded familiar. I personally loved the story for its genre, but I wouldn’t know my parents like it for the same reasons too. This story over a 100 years old, and still has people loving it globally.…
Fate is defined as the phenomenon in which unavoidable events befall a person, regardless of what they do. In the tragic tale of "The Monkey's Paw" by W. W. Jacobs, its entire premise is based on the White family's inability to comprehend this idea of fate. And so, once confronted with the opportunity to make their wishes come true , they don't even hesitate to wish upon the Monkey's Paw. In doing so, they themselves cause their destruction, representing the theme that "those who interfere[] with [fate] do so to their sorrow." (Jacobs 2) Similar to many other stories, this theme intertwines with most, if not all, events in the narrative. With all of this is in mind, the story elements contribute to the overall theme of this narrative by influencing…
