Money is the most precious thing to people, but does it create happiness? Well, in Lola Ridge’s poem “The Woman with Jewels” shows that no matter how much money you have it doesn’t make you happy. This poem the author describes how a woman in a café is dressed up in diamonds and jewels, and from far away she seems fine, but if you look closer she is upset that she is all alone and unhappy. Also, at the end of the poem the woman ends up leaving very upset. Throughout the poem, Ridge uses the imagery, and tone to convey the idea that money doesn’t buy happiness.
Ridge uses imagery to show that money doesn’t make happiness. For example, when she describes the diamonds in the beginning of the poem she says “diamonds gush from her ear lobes” showing that the diamonds are very bright and shiny, and whenever you see the woman the first time you think that she is happy with what she has and is very bright shiny. While, in the end of the poem Ridge describes the diamonds “There is an agitation in her gems” showing that if you look closer that the diamonds aren’t as bright and shiny as they were the first time you looked at them. For example, she uses tone by stating “That quiver incessantly, emitting trillions of fiery rays” Ridge is being very direct that the woman in the poem is very sad or even crying. This is showing that after everything she has, she is not happy with having all of this money and being alone. Also, the author says “And her mouth is scarlet and full- only a little crumpled” showing that if you look a little closer that she is not as perfect as she looks from far away.
