The greasers were outsiders in the community, and she played off of that to create the title even though they never fully stated they were outsiders. But can’t the socs be outsiders too?
Both the socs and the greasers were outsiders in their own way, the greasers conform to the way the socs live and the socs didn’t conform to the way the greasers live. Even though the socs can fit the outsider definition as well, I believe that Hinton was thinking of the greasers when she wrote this book. The book revolves around the greasers and even though the socs appear and are a main part of the book, the greasers are still the stars of the show. You might ask, who are the outsiders of our generation?
In some way, I think every one of us is an outsider and maybe that’s what Hinton was trying to get at. Even though most of us fit in this group of people, we all are still trying to find our way and not be the odd man out. Maybe the pursuit to become insiders is what makes us all outsiders.
