Carl Von Clausewitz said, “Courage, above all things, is the first step in becoming a warrior.” When deciding what word to use, I contemplated what word best describes myself. The word handsome would have been too easy. Smart would have been a stretch; however, when I looked into the mirror, I saw myself clothed in armour, and who wears armour? Warriors. Obviously, I am not a soldier suiting up to go to the front line in defense for the United States of America; however, I do dress out for war every morning, and I return home with scuffed boots and coated in disgust. The war I wage is the war of myself against the world. That is why I chose this word, because a warrior is precisely who I am.

I asked them what immediately came to mind when they heard the word warrior. All 20 associated the word with a positive connotation. They all were so proud of who or what they thought about when they heard the word warrior. Five out of ten for the ages between fifteen and twenty associated the word with Jesus Christ. They proclaimed his strength, glory, and endurance. Two of the ten associated the word with their mom. They both described their moms as fearless, strong, and persistent. One mother survived breast cancer after it returned three different times. One mother is recently divorced, raising three kids alone, and working at her dream job. One associate the word with an uncle who dropped out of school in 7th grade, and he now owns a company that builds million dollar house. She informed us that there is not a challenge that her uncle cannot overcome. The two remaining thought about their high school football team and the main character in a video game. The football team was described as warriors due to the fact that they often lose, yet they face each game with a new mindset and strength. The video game took me a little by surprise. They guy chose a main character in a video game, because he conquers all every time; he is also who everyone desires to be. The song starts with the lyrics that talk about her never being able to tell this story and how she was weaker before. “I was broken and bruised”(youtube, 2013). The chorus proclaims that now she is a warrior and she is stronger than she has ever been. Based off of the lyrics, the song is about someone hurting her and making her grow up too fast. The lyrics read, “there is a part of me that I cannot get back- a little girl who grew up too fast”. At the age five she was a singer and the age seven, she was an actor (youtube, 2013) At the age of 14 she was exposed to mean comments and gossip. She became bulimic at the age of 14 and also began to take out her emotions on her wrist (youtube, 2013). On youtube.com a video has her talking to ABC news about the song warrior; she says she all the previous aspects are what inspired her to write the song, and she considers herself a warrior(youtube, 2013).
