The zebra storyteller
I must say that I never really appreciated reading The Outsiders in high school as I did reading it again this time around. Ponyboy's narrative is such and up and down read that its exactly as if i were speaking to my younger bother except for the gang fights and people dying. Ponyboy’s understanding of the way social groups function and the way each of the group members play such a huge role are way beyond that of a 14 year old. The distorting effects of hatred and rivalry make the reading less then objective. Its a clear cut read that tries to bride a gap between rich and poor, the honored and the treacherousness, all the while having a child grow up before his time and making sense of the senseless.
The author has a constant motifs playing throughout the book. From the beginning Ponyboy compares himself to Pip from a Dickens novel, then again refers to a Frost poem “Nothing Gold can Stay. I think referencing to this identity of confusion and trying to make sense of a world that often times presents itself in to simplistic of a way. The story divides two gangs apart just by social class but the way Ponyboy see’s it everyone has the same struggles at the end of the day.
Also keeping with motif, the author empathizes on the details of character eyes. Ice blue being heartless and invulnerable while another guys eyes were black as if blocked from feelings and always on the ready.
I cant help but relate this book to the West Side Story. It was a movie that came out some time The outsiders but they both touch on that coming of age story between two gangs trying ot prove themselves. One touched on love yes, but isn't that in some way what Ponyboy was doing with his brothers. He never really thought that Darry loved him and the only person he thought really loved him was Soda. Westside Story also touches on a need to find love and the differences between social classes.
All three of the brothers stories play out through Ponyboys eyes. Soda’s love leaving him

One boy’s once simple life is impacted by tragic loss after making one bad decision. The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, is a novel about the rivalry between greasers and Socs. It is narrated by the main character, Ponyboy Curtis. He tells the reader about his life being turned upside down after making one childish mistake. The greaser struggle more than the Socs because they are poor, the Socs jump them, and people think that they are trash.…

    The Outsiders Summary

It contains very strong theme about dysfunctional family, use of drugs and crime. I guess the board of education was afraid that the students will imitate the events in the book. However, I understand why they decided to re-allow it in schools. The author, who wrote this book around our age really wanted to deliver that we can all live together in peace and conflict only bring more conflict. Although the family in the Outsiders wasn’t the best family you could ask for, they had so much love inside them they didn’t actually portray to each other. They just didn’t know the right way to express it. I would rate this book 4/5 because of the effectiveness of the author trying to deliver her message in a coherent manner. I highly recommend all teenagers to read this book. Overall, I think this compelling story will grasp even the most reluctant readers thanks to the deep bond of sympathy. There is also a movie “The Outsiders”, although I happen to feel that it fails to deliver the strong message as realistic and in sequence as the…

The outsiders movie and novel have many differences and similarities. I have only written about two of each but it is always fun to go back and look for more There is a hug variation between the two, the tiny details were precisely the same. The Outsiders is about a group of kids that are all different some are greasers, which have the leather jackets and the slicked back hair, and there are the Socs, they are the rich kids of town and are more dressed up then the greasers are. One way that the book is different from the movie is that the movie didn't say anything about Sodapop, the main character's older brother, wanting to get married to a girl when she is out of school and in the book there is a few pages about how much Soda loves…

The novel starts out with Ponyboy exciting the cinema into the darkness of the night, alone, which is frowned upon in the greaser world. Two main rules for a Greaser include; they always stick together, and never get caught. As Ponyboy walks home alone, he perceives he’s being stalked, truth behold a group of Socs pop out of the dark, and are quick to commence harassing Ponyboy. Darry soon gets word of what has happened…

The real main character of The outsiders is still Ponyboy. After all it seems like he wrote the book because of one full circle quote. “ When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home…” (Pg 1 and 180). In addition to having him write the book he is ultimately the main character because it is written from his point of view. For example, almost every line in the book has him thinking in it or describing something through his eyes. “I had walked down…” (Pg 31) or “...this church gave me a creepy feeling.” (Pg 67). All in all Ponyboy has changed as a character through the book and is indeed the main character.…

The Outsiders gives the reader hints and ideas from the story explaining how we should act and other moral issues. For example, a message the author describes is to stay young and innocent. The Greasers, specifically the younger Greasers, are taught to smoke and kill at a young age. This leads them to do bad things such as going to jail, participating in rumbles, and robbing stores. In other words, bad influence at a young age allows them to do illegal actions. By showing these actions from characters and the negative results, Hinton leads readers to the best idea of civility- trying to prevent the habit of performing crimes and being corrupted. Also, S.E. Hinton sends an important message to people who want to give up. She gives clues throughout the story about the importance of friendship and to not block out your emotions and problems. When Johnny dies, Ponyboy started to give up, emotionally and physically. He keeps on convincing himself that Johnny isn’t dead and also neglects his family, including his gang. S.E. Hinton teaches the readers that just because they’ve been…

The Outsiders book is a great book that is action packed, joke filled, and great for imagination. In the book it shows the hardship of the “Greasers” lives versus the hardships of the “Socs” lives which were supposedly much easier. It also shows the thoughts that ran through Ponyboy's head as and after he was helping the kids safely out of the burning church. In the book, Sodapop looks the best by far. “Soda is handsomer than anyone I know (Hinton 7).” Johnny is just a scrawny little boy. Ponyboy has long greased back hair. “My hair is longer than a lot of boys (Hinton 1).” Darry looks tough and mean. Dally is hard,…

The title of this book relates to the story, because in the book, Ponyboy and Johnny are "outsiders." They can be thought of as Outsiders because they are labeled Greasers although they do not act like hoodlums, like the rest of the Greasers. They are thought of as Greasers just because they live on the East Side of town, and because they slick back their hair. But Ponyboy and Johnny are different then all of the other Greasers because they show their emotions, and are sensitive.…

Ponyboy embraces his love for movies and enjoys the company of people who he likes. Cherry opens her heart instead of closing it to others. “Ponyboy, listen don’t get tough. You’re not like the rest of us and don’t try to be…”-Two-bit Matthews Page 171. The Outsiders is a novel written by S.E Hinton in the 1960’s, the novel is based on a true story. The story is about Ponyboy, a teenager that belongs in the gang called Greasers. There is another gang that opposes the Greasers called the Socs. The two gangs live in two sides of Oklahoma, the Greasers being in the east, and the Socs being in the west. The Socs and the Greasers often fight each other. To society, the Greasers are low class and cause trouble, while the Socs are rich and can do no harm.
