Heroes are seen in all kinds of stories and they are universal characters. They possess qualities that are above the ordinary. They also have a tragic flaw that usually ends up leading to their down fall in the story. They do, however end up learning from their experience and grow through it. The novel Their Eyes Were Watching God has a character that could be described as a hero. The main character, Janie, is a hero because she has extraordinary physical qualities as well as virtues, she has character flaws that lead to her downfall, and she manages to make her fall have some value. Janie is a hero because she has physical features and a high status in the society that the average person does not have. She is three-quarters white and therefore has a light complexion and curly hair. She was considered black so she lived amongst them, they were her society. The black people did not look like her and many women in her society envied her physical features. Jody was the mayor and since Janie was married to him, she had a high status in the community. She had what every women in the society wanted. These qualities contribute to Janie being a hero because they elevate her status from that of a regular person in that society. Janie’s character flaw would be her inability to express her true feelings to others. Her relationship with Jody became sour because of the lack of communication on both their parts. She held in her true feelings toward him making her grow angry. She wanted to find true love so much more after a horrible relationship with Jody that she settles for Tea Cake. She doesn’t express herself with Tea Cake either, which eventually leads to her downfall. She only accepts the good in Tea Cake even when all his flaws are very evident.
