Throughout the story, Hurston uses the different depictions of nature to convey the convergence of the beauty of life’s fairing with the anguish that stems from the death and destruction it brings, in order to portray how this mergence allowed Janie to completely transform from a naïve girl dreaming of love, to a woman who understands the importance of her own self worth. Early in Janie’s story, Hurston describes Janie’s perspective of love and sexuality through the delicacy of a pear tree, however amongst this imperative symbol, one must not miss the significance of Janie’s mother, Leafy, who is discussed soon after. Janie views the connection between the bees and the pollen to be exemplary of how love should be, not forced or derived from possession, but rather rise from a union between two passionate individuals. “I thought of Gatsby’s wonder when he first picked out the way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night” (Fitzgerald, 180) The green light is a depiction of Gatsby’s impossible fantasy for Daisy’s love. Nick compares Gatsby’s situation to the rest of society. Everyone’s past follows them, drawing everyone back from the their unfeasible futures. Hurston alludes to the pear tree for Janie’s aspirations. “She was stretched on her back beneath the pear tree soaking in the alto chant of the visiting bees, the gold of the sun and the panting breath of the breeze when the inaudible voice of it all came to her. So this was a marriage!” (Hurston) Janie takes this experience and searches for it throughout the novel. Her hopes and dreams are to find love, the force driven by the natural world. Hurston retouches the pear tree as her relationships progress but Janie begins to realize that her freedom is what makes her joyful.…
