Thematic Unit of Study Walking into a science classroom in La Quinta Middle School you will see students working hard on their science project of building a bridge with toothpicks. La Quinta Middle School is located in the desert of southern California. The teacher Miss Miller teaches 8th grade Science. During the months of April and May, students took four weeks to take a series of standardized testing. The tests were spread out throughout the four weeks to give students a break in between to insure the best performance. Miss Miller pushes her students hard throughout the year; she feels the bridge building is a break and a reward to students for working so hard. The students had to follow specific steps to be able to start to build their bridges. Miss Miller has setup specific criteria for students to learn the standards of forces from a gravity pull.
Building a Bridge Miss Miller started out the projects teaching students bridge vocabulary. Each student wrote down the definitions of the vocabulary and reviewed with the students. Students were given a worksheet to practice their vocabulary. Next Miss Miller had her students go into the computer lab and choose a bridge to research. Students were told to find three interesting facts and write a research paper. Students were given three days to do their research and five days to write their papers. The teacher supplied students with handouts to help answer questions to assist in the writing process. The other handout was a check off list that gives a step-by-step of what needs to be done. Students follow the steps and show the students what each step and assignment is worth. This helps students to understand the process and the point process to makes students accountable. Students received a few worksheets to help the teacher to make sure her
