THEME AND NARRATIVE OF A SHORT STORY
William Sidney Porter (1862-1910) wrote under the pseudonym O. Henry. “The Gift of the Magi” written in 1906 has become a beloved Christmas tale. It has been adapted into musicals and operas. It is a story about a man and a woman who are so much in love that they are willing to sacrifice their most beloved possessions in order to give their true love a Christmas gift. The overall theme of the narrative is sacrifice and love. I will use symbolism and setting as the literary elements to describe how love and sacrifice is the theme of this short story.
The theme of “The Gift of the Magi” is sacrifice and love. “The theme in a piece of literature is not a summary of the plot; it is not a statement about a dominant impression or mood; it is not a moral or proposition; it is not the attitude of the writer. Theme is more complex than any of these elements of fiction; it can’t be defined in a single word. Theme in fiction is associated with something abstract, something broad: The theme in a story is associated with an idea that lies behind the story. Every story narrows a broad underlying idea, shapes it in a unique way, and makes the underlying idea concrete. That’s how theme is created. In other words, the theme in a story is a representation of the idea behind the story. “(Clugston, 2010 p7.1)
The setting of the narrative is poverty. The setting is described as “the time or place in which fictional events occur. It puts boundaries around the action and defines the environment in which conflict can be witnessed and character development observed. Setting may also have a social dimension in which particular local customs, dress, or speech provide a framework for understanding the characters and their interactions.” (Clugston, 2010 p.6.4) Della counting her pennies visualizes the depth

The story I read and critiqued was, “The gift of the Magi”. In order to find the theme of this short story, I had to look beyond the plot, which tells the reader what happened in the story (Clugston, 2010, section 5.5). The theme of this story I believe would be “selfless love”. Other readers, who read the same short story as I did, might have an entirely different theme. This is actually to be expected and is even common. This is because every reader has a different relationship to literature due to each individual’s different experience throughout life. The theme of selfless love, I chose due to I feel like the writer chose selfless love as the underlying idea of the story. The story did have items of joy, sadness, and generosity; however the underlying idea was how Jim and Della went to great lengths in order to make sure they each had an unbelievable present for Christmas for each other. The couple had no idea the other one was selling the most cherished item they…

The Gift of the Magi shows many ironic aspects. How Della adores her hair, thinking so highly that no queen jewels could ever match the beauty of her hair. Or how Jim thinks his watch is so priceless that no king could ever have such a jewel, but when wanting to show their affection to one another they sell their priceless jewels just to find out that they each sold their priceless jewels to get something for one another. One a comb for the now missing hair, the other a golden chain for the now sold watch.…

The setting of a story can be affected by poverty. In "Blues Ain't No Mockingbird" the family often moves from place to place when Granny gets upset with people. She does not like it when people assume that she needs help or encouragement just because she is poor. "…Mr. Judson bringin us boxes of old clothes or raggedy magazines. Or Mrs. Cooper comin in our kitchen and touching everything sayin how clean it was". Granny seems to be the type of person who would take that statement the wrong way because Granny thinks that other people don't assume she would clean because she is poor. (Bambara 122). Poverty in "Marigolds" forces Lizabeth's family to live in a shanty town with "… dirt roads and grassless yards" (Collier 634), which just adds to the depression and anger that already exists in them. The family seems to realize that they are poor and probably will always be poor so instead of fighting it they curl up and hide. If…

What is the point of any piece of great literature? Or rather, what is great literature? Some would say that accomplished literature is a way of exceptionally telling a story. However, what is the point of storytelling? In many cases, stories are told for entertainment. However, most stories have a moral or theme conveying an important message about life or how to live it. This is the point of great literature, to convey this message beautifully. Some pieces of great literature are The Story-Teller, by Saki, Geraldine Moore the Poet, by Toni Cade Bambara, and Enemy Territory, by William Melvin Kelley. To understand the themes of great literature, you must also understand how to analyze it. The content analyzed in these stories is the setting, plot, and point of view.…

In order to delineate the notional structure for The Velveteen Rabbit, one must first assess the correct discourse type. In reviewing the narrative, procedural, behavioral, and expository discourse types, The Velveteen Rabbit is undeniably a narrative discourse in surface and notional structure. The plot or notional structure of the story provides insights into what one would imagine is a toy's ultimate dream of being loved and becoming real. The story begins with the phrase, "There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid." This sentence is an example of a formulaic aperture. This narrative discourse takes us from its introduction as a new toy stuffed in a stocking on Christmas morning through an early period in a boy's adolescence as seen through the eyes of a toy rabbit made of velveteen.…

James Joyce, a most prestigious author of many titles, has incorporated into his works many different thoughts, life experiences, as well as themes. Those three things that he used in his works I believe are what made him the awesome author he is today. The main focus of this paper is to inform you of the themes that reoccur in many of his short stories. Some themes that I noticed were: family, frustration, dreams of escape, love infatuations, and finally, sin.…

A short story is normally fiction, meaning, it’s made up. It focuses on one or two main characters and on a single conflict or problem.
