Theme of Love in A View From The Bridge
The purpose of this essay is to discuss the theme of love and how it is presented in A View from the Bridge, the importance of love in the play, the characters that demonstrate the various types of love, and how the characters are affected by these different types of love.

Throughout the play, Eddie show unnatural love for Catherine and not only acts like a father to her, but also as a jealous boyfriend. I dont believe it and I wish to hell youd stop it! This quote is a good example of Eddies jealousy about Rodolpho and Catherines relationship. He has shown his unnatural feeling for Catherine before when he was telling her not to wear high heels and that the men were looking at her too much: ...youre walking wavy...I dont like the looks theyre giving you in the candy store. Then he also shows that he really cares about Catherine by saying You aint all the girls.When Beatrice notices Eddies unnatural love for Catherine, she encourages Rodolpho and Catherines relationship and talks to Eddie. Look, honey, you wanna get married, or dont you wanna get married? What are you worried about, Katie? When Beatrice says this to Catherine, she clearly encourages her relationship with Rodolpho. The relationship between Eddie and Beatrice also gets worse as she asks Eddie: When am I gonna be a wife again, Eddie?The romantic love between Rodolpho and Catherine is, according to Eddie just to get a Green Card and to be able to legally stay in the USA. Catherine argues that Rodolpho is innocent and that he simply loves her. The fact that Catherine loves Rodolpho is clearly shown when Rodolpho is singing and Eddie interrupts him and she says: Leave him finish, its beautiful! Hes terrific! Its terrific, Rodolpho. Rodolpho indicates his love for Catherine as well when Eddie asks him if he would like some sugar with the coffee and he replies: Yes! I like sugar very much! This might have a symbolic reason as sugar also stands for love.

The play revolves around the Carbone family who are also Italian Immigrants called Eddie and Beatrice; a married couple with their niece Catherine. The family smuggle in two relatives into their home by the names of Marco and Rodolfo; during the play Rodolfo becomes friendly with Catherine. The idea of Rodolfo and Catherine as a couple torments Eddie, Eddie’s torment is made clear to us through Alfieri. Alfieri is considered as the mouth of the play as he opens and closes the play, he has three major roles that make the play enjoyable for the reader, he creates dramatic tension through commentating the play and explaining what is happening at each scene, he is both an actor and commentator in the play so he reveals more about the characters and the deeply lying emotions within them, he is also the narrator of the play so he sets the scene and tells the audience what is going on. In this essay I will talk about how Arthur miller uses Alfieri as a dramatic device to enhance the enjoyment for the audience through various techniques such as foreshadowing and how Miller uses Alfieri to expose Eddie’s weaknesses.     This quotation is said earlier on in the play by Eddie but Beatrice later gives the same advice to Catherine but in regards to Eddie. Beatrice thinks Catherine needs to grow up and become a woman and to do this she needs to decide by herself whether she wants to marry Rodolfo. She needs to stop walking around the house in her slip in front of Eddie, and not sit on the edge of the tub while Eddie shaves his beard. The reader learns from this that being a woman means reserve and modesty in front of men, and independently making decisions. Women are also presented as to be physically weak because they did not do very energy consuming jobs, and instead they went to work in an office like Catherine. We learn from Eddie that it is important for a woman not to attract men's attention and we know this because Eddie tells Catherine that she is “beautiful” and “different from other girls”. He warns her that all the men’s heads would be ‘bobbing like windmills’ should they see her walk past, this also links to the idea that getting married was perceived as a basic function for the women at this time. To support this we know that during the talk between Beatrice and Catherine, Beatrice addresses Catherine by saying "You're a woman [...] and now the time came when you said goodbye." which suggests that once a woman sees herself as a women it is her duty to leave the house and settle down with a husband, but it could also mean that a girl only becomes a woman after leaving her father figure. This line is said by Beatrice which could mean that the reader can view it as a way of Beatrice saying that she thinks it is time for Catherine to leave in order for Beatrice to have her husband back as Beatrice may think that Catherine is stealing her chance of being…
