Theme Of Class In To Kill A Mockingbird
To Kill A Mockingbird is set in the small local of Maycomb County, Alabama in the 1930s. The main focus of the story is the trial against Tom Robinson who was accused of raping young Mayella Ewell. The story can be seen through the eyes of protagonist, Scout Finch who is the daughter of Tom Robinson’s lawyer, Atticus Finch. Protagonist Scout Finch will be the one to introduce us to our antagonist, Mayella Ewell. In this small town race, gender, and class will determine the power of an individual in this small Alabama community.

As class pertains to the work, class can be defined as: the system of ordering a society in which people are divided into sets based on perceived social or economic status. Class can determine many qualities

During the trial, Atticus balances what is morally right and what the local community desires. Tom Robinson is innocent, but he is proven guilty because he is black, and the girl he was accused of raping, Mayella Ewell, is white. Maycomb’s society turns a blind eye to the case and allows Mayella to win because of the inequality between whites and blacks. Tom is found guilty and is then placed in prison.
