As class pertains to the work, class can be defined as: the system of ordering a society in which people are divided into sets based on perceived social or economic status. Class can determine many qualities
of a person including their power in society. The antagonist Mayella Ewell is low ranking in class in her community, she is a member of a very low income family who lives in a cabin that was abandoned by Negroes behind the town dump. Mayella lacks the proper education needed to succeed in her life out of the lower class. Class can determine the power of an individual, Mayella because of her family. Her family name gives Mayella a label titling her to not be taken seriously, the Ewell label is a stereotype in this community. The Ewells are not taken seriously, they have very little power, and a low rank in class. Others ,however may see the Ewells as powerful due to the fact that people pity them because of their circumstances. Even through pity, the Ewells especially Mayella are considered powerless in their class.
