Why Is Atticus Finch Wrong
“Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children.” Charles R. Swindoll. The book To Kill a Mockingbird is set in a small town, called Macomb, in the deep south of Alabama. Atticus Finch, one of the main characters and one of the best loved characters in American literature is the loving father of Jim and scout. Atticus was assigned to defend a black man in trial where the cards were stacked against him because of his race. Most of the town wanted Tom Robinson, the defendant, in the electric chair. Since his life was in danger from the town, Atticus went down to the county jail to protect and watch after Tom. When Atticus told Jim and Scout he was leaving and would not be home until after they had gone to …show more content…
Jim and Scout were young and Atticus had the job of training them up to be responsible adults. He also loved them and wanted to build their character up so they would be respectable people. Some people say Atticus should not have punished Jim and Scout for not going home.
They argue the first reason is there was no harm. No one was hurt, and they even helped save the situation from someone getting hurt. (This time it went well, but it might not go well the next time. Atticus should not chance it. ), although this is true, it might not have ended that way and many people could have been hurt. Next time they disobey Atticus it might not go so well The second reason they argue for is they helped Atticus’ trial by talking to Mr. Cunningham, which helped Atticus’ trial since Mr. Cunningham was on the jury. It does not matter, they disobeyed. It turned out fine this time, but next time they disobeyed the outcome might not be the same.
In conclusion, Atticus should have punished Jim and Scout for leaving because of parenting problems, deliberate disobedience, and cultivating character. This matters to parents and children because parents are responsible for their children’s

“ chapter 5 p. 52 This quote is explaining how Atticus does not change through his perspectives on the events or Scout and Jem. Another key point would be that Atticus treats his children ( Scout and Jem ) like their adults. He uses all of his mature treatments on Scout and Jem, but also recognizes that they are children and make mistakes.…

Instead of Atticus giving his kids the easy way out, he wants them to own up to the bad things they’ve done (or he thinks they’ve done). He has raised them to live an upright, honest, and moral life and he wants to encourage them that no matter how difficult something might be, you should always do what’s right in the long run. Even when Heck tries to tell Atticus that Jem did not try to kill Mr. Ewell Atticus disregards the obvious facts in exchange for instilling a sense of pride in honesty in his children. Atticus is much less concerned with judging his children than with how his children might judge him.…

He is always doing his best to set a good example for them. Especially with Boo Radley, Atticus tells his kids how Mr. Radley has the right to stay inside his house and maybe there is a good reason for doing so. Atticus values others while on the other hand, people in Maycomb such as Stephanie Crawford make up and spread rumors about Mr. Radley. Also, on Scouts terrible first day of school, Atticus gives her some great advice that not many people would have thought of. While many of Scout's classmates complain about how bad Miss Caroline is, Atticus explains to Scout how she should look at things from Miss Caroline's perspective. It was her first day in Maycomb and should not be expected to know everything about the town. The advice Atticus gives has much more value to him rather than society.…

Atticus' management shows that he wants the best for her, also that he always knows how to show her the positive side in everything and in addition that he is more concerned with Scout getting an education than feeling comfortable at school. This shows that he truly wants that she will have a good life and that she will be a well educated girl. An Example for that is when he teaches her how to read. I think this makes his parenting seem reasonably good and that he just wants the best for his children. In generally he teaches his children to respect people for who they are, not to be prejudice, and to consider things from other points of…

The case Atticus is presented with in To Kill A Mockingbird is one that challenges his morals. The county sheriff, Heck Tate, tells Atticus that he has “everything to lose” from taking on the case. Knowing that he and his children will be looked down upon by the majority of the population in Maycomb County, Atticus decides that he will defend Tom Robinson anyway. When asked why by his daughter Scout, he says that if he did not he,” couldn't hold up [his] head in town, [and he] couldn't represent this county in the legislature”. Atticus knows the right thing to do is to defend Tom, so he would be ashamed of himself if he decided not to. Atticus could have easily turned down the case and spared himself and his children the backlash. Atticus' decision to take on Tom's case provided Tom with a defense attorney that would fight for his release.…

Atticus shows great compassion and tolerance when he stands up for the Negroes. He stands up and represents Tom Robinson because he believes that everyone should be treated equally in the court of law. He knows that because Tom was a Negro there would be a slim chance of winning. That fact never discouraged him though because he says that the main reason he is representing Tom is because, “ if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature” (75). He recited a speech, which clearly states that Tom Robinson is not guilty. In that speech he says, “our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal” (205). He believed that prejudice and stereotyping is wrong and he tries to teach these morals to Scout and Jem.…

In chapter 9, Atticus and Scout are talking and she explains how Cecil said Atticus defended n’s, “I’m simply defending a Negro- his name’s Tom Robinson,” (Lee 100) Atticus states. Atticus goes on to explain why he is defending Tom Robinson and Scout asked : “‘Atticus, are we going to win it?’ ‘No honey,’” (Lee 101). He knows that he won’t win the case, yet he still defends Tom Robinson. An assumption can be made that Atticus is attempting to change the order of the Maycomb County, and is doing the right thing in order to do so. Atticus is trying to instill in Scout the idea of compassion and empathy. Scout has previously only seen things from one perspective: hers, without considering all the other aspects that come along with a person’s actions. He implies that people cannot be prejudged and deserve to be given full range of thought. Being a main theme in the novel, the lesson directly relates to the ‘overlooked’ people in the novel such as Arthur Radley and Tom Robinson.…

How could you take such a risk, Atticus, how could you? (Lee 223). Nothing was going to stop Atticus from being present in that courtroom and doing his mission. All things considered, the jury found Tom guilty and Atticus gathered his things and walked out that courtroom.
