As Roy and Jillian venture together to devil’s tower in hopes of finding information about what is going on, and also find Jillian’s son, the two characters, who don’t even know each other closely, build a trusting relationship throughout the journey. As both characters see one another from medium close up angles, where we can see how distressed both characters are in their situation, they begin to move towards one another. This is where a tracking shot begins to take place. Both characters are simultaneously running towards one another and a horizontal camera follows Jillian as she is running towards Roy and vice versa as Roy is running towards Jillian. This tracking shot shows the expression in each characters face as they see one another, until finally coming together, when both characters hug each other closely as if they were best friends. This final shot of the characters finally coming together is seen as a medium long shot. We see the characters from waist up hugging each other closely, yet a distance remains from the camera and characters where parts of surrounding civilians are present, as well as small interior portions of the boxcar where the camera sits. The combination of tracking shots and the final camera angle help to express the theme of trust within the characters as they are finally joined together in their journey to find Jillian’s son, and information about their encounters with a third
