“We are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity. We cannot remain looking inwards at ourselves on a small and increasingly polluted and overcrowded planet,” (Stephen Hawkings). Greed has many consequences in our life and can affect more than just ourselves. Greed is in our innermost beings from the day we are born, ‘till the day we die. We force ourselves to give up those selfish ambitions with no avail. We fall into the traps of materialistic items and lose sight of the things that are essential to us. It's the unexpected aftermath that brings us to our knees to weep. She left around four in the morning and got home only to discover that the necklace she had borrowed was now missing. Her husband searched all night, up and down streets for it only to return home empty-handed. They bought a new one that they couldn’t afford and told Mme. Forestier that it was hers. They were hoping to find the original and get their money back, but unfortunately they never found it. They were now in serious debt and had to work 10 years without maids or servants just to pay off their debt. Then one day Mathilde saw Mme. Forestier in the park and grew angry so she yelled at her. Then to Mathilde’s surprise Mme. Forestier told her that her necklace was only a knockoff which made Mathilde feel super upset for the trouble she had caused everyone.
Guy de Maupassant but a lot of hidden feelings into this story. He showed the power of greed which made me convict myself in the greed that I have in my life. Am I that greedy, came to mind a few times while reading “The Necklace.” It made me feel sad am I pictured her husband being dragged into her selfish scheme while he selflessly attended to her every
