Being stuck in the wildern for the entire summer is one traumatic event. What if you had to survive the winter in the wilderness with nothing but the clothes on your back. The story Brian’s winter by gary paulsen takes place after the book Hatchet if he wouldn't have gotten recused. Now he has to brave a canadian winter. The theme of this book is to pay attention to what is going on around you. I know this because brian hasn't been paying attention to what is going on around him like winter changing and the animals acting different. It has been getting ccolder and colder each day and he just doesn't notice it as a sign of winter.
The first detail that shows this theme is on page 21 When the text reads. “Brian had become his own worst enemy
because in all the business of hunting fishing and surfing he had forgotten the primary rule: Always, always pay attention to what was happening.” This clearly shows that he hasn't been paying attention to what is going on around him. If he would have been paying attention he wouldn't have been attacked by the bear in the middle of the night. This is just one way that this shows that the theme of this book is alway pay attention.

When the text reads “Cold enough so that the sleeping bag felt almost delicious, and just as he closed his eyes it came to him all the signs, all the little nuggets. The cold would get worse.” This shows it took him to finally realise that winter is coming. He wasn't paying attention. Now that he finally realised that winter's coming it might be too late for him to get ready for it.
