because in all the business of hunting fishing and surfing he had forgotten the primary rule: Always, always pay attention to what was happening.” This clearly shows that he hasn't been paying attention to what is going on around him. If he would have been paying attention he wouldn't have been attacked by the bear in the middle of the night. This is just one way that this shows that the theme of this book is alway pay attention.
Another detail that shows that pay attention to what is going on around you is show on page 23. When the text reads “Cold enough so that the sleeping bag felt almost delicious, and just as he closed his eyes it came to him all the signs, all the little nuggets. The cold would get worse.” This shows it took him to finally realise that winter is coming. He wasn't paying attention. Now that he finally realised that winter's coming it might be too late for him to get ready for it.
