Theme Of Isolation In Catcher In The Rye
Many people feel lonely or isolated. This problem is not new. In The Catcher In The Rye, J.D. Salinger talks about this issue using Holden,the main character of the novel, to do so. In his novel, he uses the symbols of Allie and Holden’s red hunting hat to bring out and show Holden’s true emotions.
When Holden is wearing the red hunting hat he is showing his desire to be alone and isolated from the rest of the world. one way the author shows this is when Holden is talking to ackley, “I pulled the old peak of my hunting hat around to the front, then pulled it way down over my eyes. That way, I couldn't see a goddam thing”. (21). This shows how Holden is isolating himself from society by pulling the hat over his eyes. Another example of this

    After a catastrophe for the fencing team Holden goes on to talk about the hat he bought and not just only then but he tells everyone about it and is quite proud of it.     Throughout the story, Holden isolates himself from everyone else. One way he isolates himself is by wearing a red hunting hat, which he bought all by himself in New York. A red hunting hat alone is an odd and unique hat for a teenager to wear, but Holden even wears it in a weird fashion. Today’s teenagers strive to be different from each other, and one way they express themselves is through their clothes. Another reason for Holden’s isolation is his impulsiveness throughout the whole story. In the beginning of the novel, Holden thinks that his roommate Stradlater took advantage of Jane and gets into a fight with him. After getting a hard hit in the face, Holden tells Stradlater “to go wash his own moron face – which was a pretty childish thing to say, but [he] was mad as hell” (45).
