Theme Of Ransom Of Red Chief
“Fear of Failure” is a well known theme that we are all familiar with. Theme can be related to movies, books, and or plays. Every movie, book, or play has a main message known as the theme. The film, “Home Alone”, and the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief”, by O’Henry both share the same theme. One theme is “Never underestimate someone smaller than you”. In the film, “Home Alone”, Kevin outsmarts the robbers and he’s just a little boy. This proves the theme “Never underestimate someone smaller than you” because size doesn’t matter in this situation, how smart you are does. In the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief”, Bill is terrorized by Red Chief and he’s only a child. This proves the theme “Never underestimate someone smaller than you” because …show more content…
One example of verbal irony in the film “Home Alone” is when Kevin told his family he just “hung around” when they were gone. That is verbal irony because Kevin didn’t just hang around, he fought off the robbers. Verbal irony is also used in the short story “Ransom of Red Chief” because in the short story it says, “ They haven’t yet found out that the wolves have taken the little lamb from the flock.” That evidence supports verbal irony because Red Chief is more like the wolf and the kidnappers are more like the lamb. The film, “Home Alone” and the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” also have examples of situational irony. In the film, “Home Alone” Kevin’s parents leave him at home because they forgot him. This describes situational irony because normally parents wouldn’t forget their child at home, but Kevin’s parents did. There is also situational irony in the short story “Ransom of Red Chief” because on page 67 Red Chief says, “I’ll behave, Snake-eye, if you won’t send me home.” This is situational irony because when a kid gets kidnapped they would usually want to go home but Red Chief doesn’t want to. Dramatic irony is used in the film, “Home Alone” and the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” also. One example from the film, “Home Alone” is when the cop was the robber because in the beginning he came to Kevin’s house asking questions. This …show more content…
A way the film, “Home Alone” is more modern is because they use technology like telephones. In the film, “Home Alone” Kevin calls to order his food when he’s hungry. This is more modern because in the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” it says, “Also, I thought it best to send a stern letter to old man Dorset that day.” That proves that the film, “Home Alone” is more modern than the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” because in “Home Alone” they used a phone and in the short story, ”Ransom of Red Chief” they sent a letter. Another way the film, “Home Alone” is more modern is because they use cars and planes to get to places. One example from the film, “Home Alone” is when Kevin’s family drove to the airport in a car. This is more modern than the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” because on page 63 it says, “After dark I drove the buggy three miles to the little village where we had rented it.” This proves that the film, “Home Alone” is more modern because Kevin’s family used a car to transport but Bill and Sam used a buggy. The last way the film, “Home Alone” is made more modern than the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” is because they both have a different setting. In the film, “Home Alone” Kevin lives in a house that has a microwave and things to eat. One example from the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” is, “The fun of camping out in a cave had made him forget that he was a

In the story “The Ransom of Red Chief” The two characters Bill and Johnny, or the Red Chief, as he likes to be called, do not get along very well, or rather, Bill is not very fond of Johnny at all. This is for a multitude of reasons, like the time that the other character Sam is off doing things like mailing letters to Johnny’s father, Bill is forced to look after Johnny, and has to play a few games with him. Like for instance the time that Johnny pretended Bill was a horse and rode him around for awhile. This would be enough for most people to just want to be away from this child as quickly as possible, but Johnny also repeatedly attacks him, barely stopped by Sam. Whether on purpose or in the play world, Johnny tries to scalp Bill and bash…

Irony, in literature can be anything from sarcasm to a shocking plot twist that can be inconvenient to the characters toward the end. A type of irony is situational which is where something very unexpected shows up at the last minute making the outcome of the story completely different then you expected. Such as the one in Lord of the Flies that effects one special character named Simon, and really almost all the characters.…

Secondly, situational irony is a discrepancy, or difference between what's expected and what really happens. One such example of this type of irony occurs for the accused; The punishment of "witches". Do they die because they truthfully say they aren't witches or live with the lie that they are? Goody Proctor was a genuine person, and yet died with the truth that she was innocent of witchcraft. What is more important, morals, or your own life? You're the judge of the case.…

There are verbal irony, situational irony and dramatic irony. An example of verbal irony from Ransom of Red Chief is on page 65 paragraph 6 it says “Me?” says I. “Oh, I got a kind of pain in my shoulder. I thought sitting up would rest it.” This is verbal irony because he is actually scared of Red Chief and that is why he is getting up. An example of verbal irony from Home Alone is when Kevin says he’s not scared when he really is. This is verbal irony because what he said is the opposite of what he feels. An example of situational irony in the Ransom of Red Chief is on page 67 paragraph 9 when they say “I was only playing a joke,” says he sullenly “I didn’t mean to hurt Old Hank. But what did he have to hit me for? I’ll behave Snake-eye if you won’t send me home. And if you let me play an example in Ransom of Red Chief is on page 71 paragraph 12 it says “In about a half an hour, I heard the bushes rustle. Bill wobbled out into the little clearing in front of the cave. Behind him was the kid. He came stepping softly like a scout, with a broad grin on his face.” and on page 72 paragraph 3 it says “The boy is gone. I have sent him home. All our plans are off.” This shows that Bill doesn’t know the boy is right behind him. This is dramatic irony. An example of dramatic irony from the movie Home Alone Kevin doesn’t know his family left for vacation. This is also dramatic irony. So this shows how all three types of irony can affect the reader and also the characters in a…

In The Story of an Hour situational irony is used when Mr. Mallard turns up alive when during the whole story he is thought to be dead. It is ironic when Mrs. Mallard dies at the end of the story. There is foreshadowing for Mrs. Mallard dying but it is still unexpected. It is also ironic when we are not told any details about Mrs. Mallard’s death when throughout the whole story so far we have been told everything that Mrs. Mallard is thinking. In The Interlopers there is situational irony when Ulrich and Georg are eaten by wolves at the end of the story. This is ironic because the two men just became friends and it is expected that they will be rescued and live happily ever after but instead they are killed by wolves. There was slight foreshadowing of their fate being decided by nature when the story states that the creatures were abnormally active tonight but the ending was still much…

There is also a very vague connection with the movie Home Alone 2. It has similarities such as two criminals that are trying to steal from a family, and in both Home Alone and The Ransom of Red Chief they have a kid who causes problems for the criminals. It is different however because in Home Alone 2, the criminals are going after household items rather than the child.…

Dramatic irony appears once in the Ransom of Red Chief. Dramatic irony is an irony when the readers know something that the characters in the story don’t know. Dramatic irony took part when Johnny is just behind Bill, while he told Sam that he sent Johnny the back to his home. After that, Sam asked Bill about medical problem, because he knew that Bill would probably shock when he see the boy again. O. Henry describes that Johnny is right behind Bill, the reader know, but Bill doesn’t know yet. For example,…

The story and movie “The Ransom of Red Chief” is alike in many ways. It is also different. In both the movie and story, the kidnappers need $2,000. They set off to find someone to kidnap in order to get money back for the person. They came across a boy named Johnny Dorset. Also in the movie and story, Bill played Indians with Johnny. Johnny gave Bill the name “Old Hank” and he gave Sam the name “Snake-eye the Spy”. The kidnappers in both the movie and story also had to pay the father $250 for the return of Johnny.…
