The East Coast is supposed to be an extravagant place full of opportunity. At the beginning of the novel, Nick expresses how he feels by saying, “ And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees- just as things grow in fast movies- I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” (pg. 8). It’s very noticeable that Nick is thrilled to be on the coast. He’s ready to start his new life and have an enjoyable time; after all, it’s a very desired area.
