When she got to highschool after her time in rehab she thought she would never get into a collage or stop her drug and alcohol problems. Maddie thought she would be in rehab her whole life. She speculated that she would never get better but she still had hope for getting released out of rehab and getting her life back together. While she was in rehab she received a call from her dad: (Nelson 37) “your mom and I talked to your principal at Evergreen,” he tells me. “It sounds like you can re-enroll after Christmas. There is some summer school …show more content…
options too. This is all dependent on how things go, of course. And what Dr. Bernstein says.” But then things transformed and she started to study then this happened.( Nelson 172) “Looks like you can graduate with your class if we can make up some credits over the summer.” Maddie didn't expect that coming and that was a sign of “there is always hope” she never thought she would be able to go to college and get a degree. This theme really supported maddie throughout the book and got her through all of her tough times.
Maddie never actually believed in hope and thought it did not apply to her since she was a drug and alcohol addict.
She never really believed in herself and though since I missed a year of school a collage won't ever accept me with that on my record. When she got to school collage wasn't on her mind what was on her mind though was more how am I going to survive. Surprisingly she didn't know it was possible for her to get good grades she had no hope for herself. As the book went on though she found out how to get herself better grades and she found hope as if it was her lost phone. At that moment she realized what was right and that was to get into college and get a good grade. When she got to collage hope found her (Nelson 287) “They finally agree to it, and when school lets out, I move in with Gina. This turns out to be fantastic summer. I work part-time at Village Books and spend the other time hanging out with Gina, going to parties and concerts and drinking iced tea in the humid summer nights.” I think the theme “hope” really describes “Recovery Road” and Maddie as a
person.
