Code Name Julie Character Analysis
In the novel Code Name Verity written by Elizabeth Wein a common theme was staying determined through tough times. Julie and Maddie, the main characters, both go through different experiences that are hard on them, but with determination they are able to problem solve and make it through. Julie went through extremely hard times, but she stayed determined and made it through her problems. The text states, “I had managed to drag myself and my chair over to the door and prepared an ambush that sent two guards sailing head over heels as they tripped on me when they came in. Von Linden really should know me well enough by now to realize that I am not going to face my execution without a fight” (101). This quote shows how Julie is staying determined …show more content…
The quote, “I’m only a civil pilot. I haven’t flown for a year. I haven’t got an instructor’s rating. I’ve a good many hours, probably more than most of our lads in the Spitfires; I’ve even flown at night. But I’m not using it. When they expand the Air Transport Auxiliary I’m going to try to join-if the WAAF’ll let me go” (73) shows Maddie stayed determined in multiple ways. The first way is that she stayed determined while becoming a pilot. The quote says, “I’ve a good many hours… I’ve even flown at night” this shows she is determined because she had to fly for many hours to become a pilot. She also had to fly in the dark at night. The original quote also shows she is determined because she had to make it through not being allowed to help in the way she would like. The quote says, “I’ve a good many hours, probably more than most of our lads in the Spitfires”. This shows that she was treated unfairly because she is more experienced than the male pilots, but they still would not let women join. However, she stayed determined and joined where she was allowed to help and decided to wait until she could become a pilot, which is shown in the quote “When they expand the Air Transport Auxiliary I’m going to try to join-if the WAAF’ll let me go”. This all shows Maddie had to stay determined through hard times to make it through them. Becoming a pilot was …show more content…
The text states, “I’m afraid I will be caught. I’m afraid Julie is dead. But of all the things I’m afraid of, there’s nothing that frightens me so much as the likelihood-the near certainty- that Julie is a prisoner of the Ormaie Gestapo” (228). This quote shows that Maddie had to stay determined while being apart from Maddie because of how hard it was on her. She was going through many things at once but also had to worry about Julie. The quote says, “I’m afraid Julie is dead”. This shows how Maddie was always worrying about Julie but she had to stay determined for the both of them so that she would not be caught. This quote proves how Maddie had to stay strong and determined through hard times even though she was afraid for both her and Julie’s life. The girls went through difficult times while they were apart but made it

To say that there is no good in evil is to deny the very reality of evil’s existence. Black and white thinking such as the topic previously stated is what truly can hurt us the most. When you look at moral issues you must acknowledge that it is a grey spectrum, with many different viewpoints. If I told any person who has actually read East of Eden that I admired Cathy? They would think me insane and possibly give me some nasty looks, as well as cross the street when I walk past. But since you have to read this essay, I think it’s fair that I make my point. Cathy is a real go-getter, she does what she has to to make ends meet. She isn’t easily swayed, and has a strong moral foundation, whether or not it’s a good one is a moot point. Lastly, she’s not easily discouraged. Even in the face of direct adversity, she brushes herself off and keeps on trucking.…

Everything is constantly changing. From the environments surrounding us to our daily schedules, change is quintessential to the human condition. All day long, we humans make choices that alter the outcome of life’s simplest to most complex details. In Emily St. John Mandel’s novel, Station Eleven, the audience witnesses the connection between choice and change in the many interwoven intricacies found throughout the plot. An example of this relationship is the Traveling Symphony’s choice of motto. “Survival is Insufficient” speaks volumes about the character of the misfit group of thespians and musicians, and it can also serve as a mantra for humanity in whatever phase of life we may find ourselves.…

John Steinbeck's East of Eden depicts humanity's struggle between virtue and in as a perpetual narrative of human history. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs. Dubose won, all ninety-eight pounds of her. According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew.” The quote by Atticus expresses Atticus’ thoughts about courage. While Atticus believes that all types of courage; physical, intellectual, and moral; are important, he believes that moral courage is the most important of all. Atticus tries to show Jem this, and Jem sees that Mrs. Dubose was exceptionally courageous. Atticus doesn’t stand idly by his words, he adheres to what he says and acts upon his words. The novel attempts to enlighten the reader that courage can be possessed by anyone and the importance of courage, by showing Atticus’ own courage.…

Paula, Jacob’s daughter, always coasts through life with an effortless smile across her face…or so it seems. Paula has a beautiful, angelic voice that could stop you in your tracks. “Paula had filled the silence with her own voice.” (175) The silence created by her Father’s omission of his past impacts Paula to have an empty, negative space in her life. On the outside, no one would ever accuse Paula of thinking negatively or being afraid. But, you cannot judge a book by its cover, “You wouldn’t believe it, but I’m still so afraid of the dark, after all this time; I go to sleep with my hands and feet twisted together for comfort.” (123) Jacob never told Paula of his past, which led to Paula feeling insecure, afraid, and lost. Once Paula does find out the truth of her father’s past, she is “broken, like somebody took her (me) apart.” (214) Jacob was just trying to protect his daughter by keeping his past a secret, but in the end has a more negative impact on her life.…

For this line is quite true: “This, she realizes, is the basis of his fear, all fear. That a light you are powerless to stop will turn on you and usher a bullet to its mark” (Doerr 160). Fear is something everyone faces. Doerr visits the theme of fear often, and reminds readers that “her great-uncle was not always so fearful, that he had a life before this war…he was once a young man who dwelled in the world and loved it has she does” (Doerr 284); the take away is that fear is learned through living. It is in the complex interweaving of the survival versus living theme and the fear theme that a powerful message is delivered. Fear cannot be broken by merely surviving, as evident by the continuing fear of all the characters surviving the war. It is only at the resolution of the book, when the war ends and remaining characters pick themselves up and dust themselves off, that fear is overcome (though not entirely, that is an impossible feat). “We rise again in the grass. In the flowers. In songs” (Doerr 529). By surviving the war, Marie-Laure was able to live again. Her story is a message to all who struggle with fear: survive until living becomes possible again. Fear cannot be forgotten or ignored, but it can be…
