The witch travels to Heorot, the mead hall, kills a few of Beowulf's soldiers, kidnaps Hrothgar's advisor, and takes Grendel's fleshy arm. Hrothgar tells Beowulf that he must take revenge on this witch and go to the mother and kill her. So Beowulf travels to the "lake that burns like a torch" (Beowulf 35) seeking the swamp hag. He finds Grendel's mother in her underwater home, the "she-wolf" (Beowulf 36) dragged Beowulf down into the murky water to the battle hall where Beowulf then decapitated the swamp hag with a magical sword.
