Silence are the words that are not said, rather then the words that are chosen. It is the fear of the truth as well as hiding from it. In the novel Obasan by Joy Kogawa, silence is a part of a culture and is a larger part of a family. The character Naomi allows silence to over come her life, which allows her to remain tortured inside the internment camp of her own body.…
Elie Wiesel’s Night, Martin Niemöller’s poem, First They Came for the Communists and Eve Bunting’s, The Terrible Things, all share the same theme with one another. The theme of these passages is that no one stood up for individuals, mostly in times where it was crucial. By not doing something to help, it created great despair and sorrow. Those who didn’t receive help were confused as to why nobody would do something to assist them, especially in time of need. Those who didn’t help assumed the best and made excuses as to why the people taken deserved to go.…

Immigration is the product of globalization, and globalization made it possible for people to move across borders, which also created a need for immigration. Globalization created unequal systems that have led some nations to be more prosperous than others, which has influenced the need to find prosperity in other countries through immigration. Immigration can be a positive experience, but there is an inherent inequality in immigration systems. Women can especially feel this inequality. The immigration system is a patriarchal system that disables women from accomplishing the goals promised to them by the immigrant dream, which is deeply ingrained in them by society. Immigration is a feminist issue because it makes women more vulnerable than…

The problem begins with public perception. Buresh & Gordon point out a fundamental disconnect. The public trusts and respects nurses as caregivers but does not understand the professional standard or practice of nursing (Buresh & Gordon, 2006). Buresh & Gordon movingly quote Joan Lynaugh, nurse historian, “Most people know they can’t get into a hospital without a doctor. What they don’t know is…
‘The conch was silent.’ Here Golding uses irony to show how the conch, the loudest material on the island, could be silent and be ‘forgotten’ at one point o time. The conch could symbolically represent the boys on the island as they being humans could yet become savages. The silence of the jungle portrays the evil among the hidden creatures in the forest. Beasts that could take over you entire soul and turn you into someone else. ‘The beast is within you’ is an absurd yet truthful line for the boys on the island.…

Silent people appear to be hiding characteristics about themselves through their quietness. When a person, specifically a woman, is silent, it is perplexing. Her silence is strange and worrisome to the people who care for her. To a reader, one may compare a female character’s silence to a loud noise. It calls for questions to be raised. No one questions why someone is loud; it is only when one becomes silent that people are concerned. In the translated Romance “Silence” by Sarah Roche-Mahdi and the novel “Their Eyes were watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston, the struggle that the main characters deal with is shown throughout their silence. It distances the characters, Silentius and Janie, from the real world by having to hide who they are as…

The connection between humans and animals is truly a special one as demonstrated in Tim Bowling's "Snowy Owl After Midnight." The speaker in the short story feels closely connected to the owl as he walks in the forest at night. The speaker believes that the owl "waits for [him]" and that the owl's "blood stirs/ at [his] presence." Also, the owl seems to understand the "heightened smell of joy and fear/ [the speaker's] bones give off. Since the night is "so quiet," the speaker feels that he and the owl are the only two "awake," Strengthening their bond even more. Both the owl and the hunter are on a search for food hence they feel a sense of connection with each other during the long dark night. As they travel together, the speaker remembers the "months" they've spent circling in "each other's silence." The speaker has a sudden urge to break the silence and talk to the owl as a friend. He longs to express to the beautiful winged creature about his "boyish dream" that consisted of the "beating heart of a snowman." Furthermore, the speaker wishes to hear the thoughts of the owl about the "blood" that is on the earth and what the owl would think if he knew the deaths that could be caused by the "clipped, pale hands" of the hunter. In some ways, the hunter desires to be like the owl. As quoted anonymously, "A wise old owl sat on an oak; The more he saw the less he spoke; The less he spoke the more he heard; Why aren't we like that wise old bird?"As the "dark and silent" night goes on, the hunter and the owl loyally remain by each others…
