"But the main thing for me, having read and seen the play many times since its appearance about fifty years ago, is that it is about waiting, about unending expectation, about the moment that comes before something which itself never comes, but which in the process reduces everyone to a frozen state of clown-like, pathetic, banality in which only limited motion is possible in virtually the same places." - (Edward Said: 'Waiting for the Change')

Indeed, Beckett's Waiting for Godot presents the nightmare of waiting without time. The subject of the play is not 'Godot' but waiting, the act of waiting as an essential and characteristic aspect of the human condition. Throughout our life we always wait for something and 'Godot' simply represents the object of our waiting - an event, a thing, a person, death.

Waiting for Godot is a play, which seems to refuse any attempt to impose meaning systematically, and it is a vision of irrational and unrationalisable process - sheer waiting without end or outcome, pure decay without the possibility of dearth. The situation or condition that the play exhibits is a universal one. It is a story of two vagabonds who desperately plunge into a futile pattern: waiting. The 'Godot' they wait for is a vague figure and would probably be a disappointment to them if he came, but as long as they can make themselves believe that he will someday come and that he offers some kind of hope, they can comfort themselves with the thought that - " in this immense confusion one thing alone is clear. We are waiting for Godot to come."

Waiting is what really matters in Waiting for Godot. Beckett's emphasis is not 'Godot' but waiting. And in this play, the pattern of waiting is an ingenious combination of expectations and let-downs of uncertainty and of gradual run-down without end. The expectations of Vladimir and Estragon seem to be both limitless and irrational; and the various climaxes and pseudo-climaxes or nor arrivals, do not change their

Also, the lines of Vladimir and Estragon in the play can be interchangeable "It hurts?" and responding, "Hurts! He wants to know if it hurts!" The repetition of this kind of dialogue shows the parallelism in the play and that despite their differences, they always come to the same conclusion. The ending has distinct parts where Vladimir has moments of insight and yet there is still repetition because despite his epiphany he never changed.     The play is introduced with a very unusual setting which portrayed as a farcical comedy which involves entertaining the audience by means of improbable and absurd situations and the layout suggests a fast-paced plot which is soon to follow. The stage directions give the immediate sense of absurdity and immorality before all the actors are even on the stage.     In Waiting for Godot, Samuel Beckett produces a truly cryptic work. On first analyzing the play, one is not sure of what, if anything, happens or of the title character's significance. In attempting to unravel the themes of the play, interpreters have extracted a wide variety symbolism from the Godot's name. Some, taking an obvious hint, have proposed that Godot represents God and that the play is centered on religious symbolism. Others have taken the name as deriving from the French word for a boot, godillot. Still, others have suggested a connection between Godot and Godeau, a character who never appears in Honore de Balzac's Mercadet; Ou, le faiseur. Through all these efforts, there is still no definitive answer as to whom or what Godot represents, and the writer has denied that Godot represents a specific thing, despite a certain ambiguity in the name. Upon study, however, one realizes that this ambiguity in meaning is the exact meaning of Godot. Though he seems to create greater symbolism and significance in the name Godot, Beckett actually rejects the notion of truth in language through the insignificance of the title character's name. By creating a false impression of religious symbolism in the name Godot Beckett leads the interpreter to a dead end.…
