This conflict is portrayed with the presence of the telescreen scrutinizing and listening to every single thing Winston does. Winston often tries to avoid it as much as possible. “Are we living in “Nineteen Eighty-Four”? The technological possibilities of surveillance and data collection and storage surely surpass what Orwell imagined. Power of language is a theme Orwell chose to labor in “1984”. Language, the so-called Newspeak is a shorten language, that shortens people’s memories, erases thoughtcrimes and brainwashes people. Development of language is interlaced with history and culture, by redefining it the Party removes the nation’s original language and all the past.
