Fahrenheit 451has very profound meanings for the readers to understand, the book has a specific purpose. As Bradbury stated he uses books as a media to protect “us” the humans of a current problem he recognizes or fear it would occur in the future. Bradbury’s novel is a type of foreshadowing of what can happen if human beings don’t do anything against the government taking control (in general) over the society. The novel itself doesn’t specifically state the main theme in Farenheit451; instead it presents many events, thoughts, and feelings that Guy Montag (the main character) describes. That can make the reader infer what the theme is, from my perspective. The conflict of the story is the desire of Montag to feel something
he’s not used to. In other words, Montag’s life has been very ordinary and unexciting; he doesn’t question his job and orders. This ordinary and meaningless life of Montag creates an inner desire of him to experience something new. He knows his goal would be satisfied by breaking the rules he so much practices in his every day life. Therefore his impulse forces him to disobey the main law in society, to read/own a book.
The main theme of Fahrenheit 451 is “censorship through the banning of books”. The novel of Fahrenheit may be taken place in a distant future or simply in the author’s imagination. However it circumstances and conditions parallels with the actual world. Its similarities with the actual world in the way that people can’t freely express without consequences, and that the government hides information that is hostile in changing people’s way of thinking. In this society books are forbidden for a reason, so the population does not conserve ideas, thoughts, and feelings from the past. Therefore the population is naïve. Because the population doesn’t have experience and a slight quantity of knowledge this make the governments feel superior and manipulate civilians without having any problems. The problem of Fahrenheit (people is too naïve, and the government uses this to brainwash people’s thoughts and way of thinking) is actually reflected on current days in the society.
This is the main theme because although Fahrenheit has many other themes, “censorship” is the one with the worst impact towards society and besides censorship is the conflict of Guy Montag and that society. Montag has many problems which can be resembled as themes, such as Knowledge and Ignorance; however censorship is the one who degrades the society piece by piece.
