Themes In Of Mice And Men
A theme is an idea that is being stated. Some themes are loneliness, age and usefulness, and the American dream. From “Of Mice and Men” I pick a character called Candy. Candy presents the three themes I stated above. “ The themes of loneliness, age/usefulness, and American Dream have a negative affect on Candy throughout the novel.

To begin with the themes, firstly, Candy is lonely. Ever since carlson shot Candy’s dog, Candy was sad and crying on the side. He used to work with him (the dog), play with him, eat with him and then Carlson just shoots him. In the text it states “ shoot him in the back of the head, he won’t feel nothin.” It’s not nice to kill someone’s best friend. Secondly, Candy’s age, Candy hasn’t worked for years because

Lennie and George are best friends traveling together in search of work on northern California farms. These two are flat broke – as in, "not even any quarters in the couch" broke. This is not good, as they have a dream of owning their own idyllic farm someday. George is the "brains" behind this operation – a smart guy who does all the talking when it comes to finding and keeping work. Lennie is physically strong, yet mentally slow. While both George and Lennie are good workers, they can’t hold down jobs for long due to Lennie's childlike mentality and odd fetish for petting things, which includes mice, rabbits, puppies, and…women. (This last one, of course, being the biggest issue).…

“‘I can still tend the rabbits, George?’ ‘Sure. You ain't done nothing wrong.’ ‘I di'n't mean no harm, George.’” (Steinbeck) Throughout John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, Lennie childishly obsesses over his and George’s plan to have their own piece of land, on which he could tend the rabbits. However, this never came to pass as Lennie was put down like an animal, by George. By writing about the lives of this unfortunate pair, Steinbeck addresses many thematic ideas such as having power and being powerless, the difference between right and wrong, and dreams and reality that help the reader better understand the human condition.…

The book Of Mice and Men was written by John Steinbeck and takes place during the Great Depression. Throughout the book we follow the two main characters, George and Lennie. George is shown to have much power over Lennie. These two and many other characters struggle with obtaining, holding, or keeping “under control” the amount of power they have or want. In Steinbeck's novel, the theme that seems to be most present is that, although people seek power, they often misuse it after obtaining it.…

J.W. Van Goethe once said “no two persons regard in the world in exactly the same way.” This means everybody has different views of the world and responds physically and mentally to different situations. I agree with this quote because we all have different perspectives and we often debate about the way we view society. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck clearly shows how two persons are different in their own independent ways. The story of two migrant workers, George and Lennie run away from a farm in weed California because Lennie who freezes when he’s s cared, doesnt let go of a girls dress she panics and accuses him of rape. they try to make their dream come true of having their own house where they can live off the fat of the land. Henri Frederic Amiel once stated, “Destiny has two ways of crushing us- by refusing our wishes and by fulfilling them.” In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, this is very true for George and Lennie. The pair has moved from ranch to ranch trying to keep down a job but Lennie who easily gets in trouble always thwarts them. They long to live the American Dream but they, like all the other workers, will never reach their dream that seems to be just beyond their fingertips. George watches over Lennie as they travel together but he cannot stop the mess that Lennie will get into at the newest ranch. Steinbeck conveys through the symbolism of playing cards, light, and Lennie’s hands that we are destined to play the hand fate deals us even if our hopes and dreams are dashed in the process of our destiny.…

    Of Mice And Men Allegory

    • 773 Words

Of Mice and Men feels like an allegory, with each character possessing a specific trait that represents something or some group in society. So, is the book just a heavy-handed lecture about how nasty people are to each other. Are all of these wrongs (racism, sexism, discrimination) treated as equally evil? Or are the characters real, individual people, rather than being merely types/symbols? This is not in your own words...what’s up with that???…
