Themes Of United By Diversity
United by Diversity For the last 140 years, University of Detroit Jesuit has had a theme that highlights an important aspect of life and education at U of D. This theme helps students to evaluate how to interact with classmates and teachers and guides students through the school year. For the 2016-2017 school year, U of D has chosen to reuse last year’s theme of United by Diversity. This slogan reminds students and faculty that people of all different races are welcomed at U of D. Simply stated, diversity is defined as, “The state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization,”. However, U of D’s theme of united by diversity expands on this definition and applies it to our lives. It also …show more content…
Once students get over discrimination and racial bias, students are challenged to unite with their fellow cubs. U of D encourages this unity in almost every activity that the school does such as Pledge Detroit, pep rallies, and sporting events. Unity can also be seen between students because of the academic rigor of the school. Students are encouraged to seek help from their fellow cubs if classes become too difficult. Unity can be seen in Pledge Detroit through students bringing in money in order to provide financial aid to other students who would otherwise not be able to attend U of D. Pep rallies focus more on unity through competition. Grades compete in different events and students cheer for their grade and are given a common goal. Finally, unity can be seen through sporting events. Hundreds of students go to cheer on their team and have some fun with other students. Through this, students are able to make new friends and unite with others to support the Cubs. Every aspect of life at U of D highlights unity between cubs and encourages all students to step out of their comfort zone and make new friends. Students can then unite together and attempt to fight racial injustice outside of

The football team from Mountain View High School won the Arizona State Championship last year. Again. Unbeknownst to the vast majority of the school’s student body, so did the Science Bowl Team, the Speech and Debate Team, and the Academic Decathlon team. The football players enjoyed the attentions of an enthralled school, complete with banners, assemblies, and even video announcements in their honor, a virtual barrage of praise and downright deification . As for the three champion academic teams, they received a combined total of around ten minutes of recognition, tacked onto the beginning of a sports assembly. Nearly all of the graduating seniors will remember the name and escapades of their star quarterback; nearly none of them will ever even realize that their class produced Arizona’s first national champion in Lincoln-Douglass Debate. After all, why should they? He and his teammates were “just the nerds.”…

The late great Maya Angelou once stated that “Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends”. While her words indicate that our attitudes, cultures and values can define our differences she also suggest that we all embody a shared sense of humanity that we might come to understand through our interactions and acknowledgments of others around us. In the 21st century we have experienced an ever -increasing diverse population, the re-election of America’s first Black President, polarizing religion wars, and a more encompassing civil rights agenda that includes women’s and LGBTQ communities. So what if we asked ourselves “what does it mean to be diverse?” What are our investments in our diversity? What are our feelings and logical reasonings about diversity? More broadly, what does diversity mean for 21st century American culture? What role does contemporary social movements like Occupy Wall Street, #Blacklivesmatter and other protest movements play as we consider the meaning of diversity and difference? What is the role of the university in defining our discussions about diversity? Through critical reading, writing and thinking we will explore these questions in depth while engaging how diversity and difference shapes our attitudes about the economy, racial and ethnic difference, sexuality,…

"Did you see the ending of that Duke game!" The president, Bill Clinton, was astonished by the miraculous ending of the Kentucky vs. Duke game. Just about anybody you could talk to would know about the game and also be astonished by it. This can show the effect a game can produce on a person and a school. During college sports games, a school and fans can be affected in a jubilant or a depressing way. For example, a school could begin to build a program with many wins to come, or they could go straight down. Also, a fan could be feeling so happy as if he is "on cloud nine," or he could feel like he has been killed as he takes pride in his team. Although this impact can be a bad circumstance, several delightful impacts can turn into traits. Three of these traits are persistence, self-esteem, and leadership. All three of these traits take place in each of three games that are arguably the greatest college sports games of all time. College sports games clearly can affect a human being and change his feeling whether it is bad or good.…

An aspect of college that I have found exciting is the school pride. I expected to see everyone on campus focused on whatever it is their goal is at Polk State but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how amped up everyone got when there was a school function like club rush, spirit week, or even a basketball game. This small campus had me fooled that no one would care or bat an eye at school related activities but it seems like thats what this school thrives on, it reminds me of the same type of camaraderie you would find at FSU on a football game-day. Club rush and spirit week were the two things that got me the most excited about being a student at Polk State, not only were they bringing all the students together to mingle and make new friendships but it was fun.…

My understanding of Diversity is no longer limited to race. Understanding the value of diversity provides the frame work for effective social and cultural interaction from the perspective of one another. Many misunderstandings and misconceptions in regards to diversity are due to the lack of understanding without feedback from one another. In society we believe the views and opinions within our own culture as truth, without taking the time to engage in dialogue to bring understanding to our views and differences. Our preconceived ideologies once allowed diversity to be a vehicle for separation, but we must redefine what diversity…

My love and interest in Houston's sports teams has given me a means of identifying with my beloved hometown. Until recently I had no idea how to connect myself with the city and the millions of other Houstonians that inhabited Houston. I then discovered the cities sports teams the Texans, Rockets, and Astros which many of the cities locals love and support endlessly. Ever since discovering these teams I have become a ferocious supporters of them win or lose. I support them no matter without any conditions I do it because I want to and because I love them. Whether I am cheering from my couch at home, a booth at a restaurant, or in the stands with other loyal followers I'm not shy of showing that the team on the field or the court are my teams. My loyalty to them has no end no matter if they squeaked past an opponent or got utterly humiliated I openly will continue through show my love and passion for something I care about. This same passion that I have shown cheering and applauding my team I have transferred into other endeavors I have undertaken. I have turned this passion of sports and Houston’s sports teams into passion for my school work and now the college application process. I have become more passionate about my school work making me more motivated to not just improve my letter grade but also to gain knowledge for the sake of gaining knowledge. My openness to show my support for something that I feel very strongly about I feel has also helped prepare me for my college experience. In college I expect that their will always be other students and professors to look for me to defend my stance.…

At Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana there has been protests about the Black Lives Matter movement. The Black Lives Matter movement “is a chapter-based national organization working for the validity of Black life” (Haki). The Black Lives Matter movement began in 2012. This movement is important because it is about equality. Equality is important because every life matters. The point of the Black Lives Matter movement is to show that one life does not matter more than another and that black lives just need some help and attention from everyone. So, to solve this controversy I am proposing raising awareness and small weekly meetings about the Black Lives Matter movement.…

"Diversity" has become one of the most often used words of our time-- and a word almost never defined. Diversity is invoked in discussions of everything from employment policy to curriculum reform and from entertainment to politics. Nor is the word merely a description of the long-known fact that the American population is made up of people from many countries, many races, and many cultural backgrounds. All that was well known long before the word "diversity" became an insistent part of our vocabulary, an invocation, an imperative, or a bludgeon in ideological conflicts.…
