AMERICAN VALUE SYSTEMS I. Theoretic Values of Contemporary America
“Americans respect the scientific method and things labeled scientific”
I disagree with this comment for reasoning that most Americans tend to stick with what they were taught. From the time you are born you are being taught a certain way depending on religion, tradition or whatever the method of learning your parents have chosen to teach by. For example, most Americans feel like certain illnesses run in the family like obesity or big-boned so some may call it. If you are taught that all your life you are not going to listen to the real reasons people become overweight and start watching what you eat because you feel like …show more content…
you are already pre-destined to be fat, so you will continue to eat what you want when you want.
II. Economic Values of Contemporary America
“They respect efficiency”
I agree with this statement because Americans love the “microwave era”, meaning things will come quick, fast and correct. A good example is swiping your credit/debit card versus withdrawing from a bank. You don’t have to waste time going into a bank or waiting in the ATM line to get money. All you have to do is go to your destination and make your POS transaction! Americans greatly care about efficiency because it makes things more convenient for them.
III.
Aesthetic Values of Contemporary America
“They respect neatness and cleanliness”
I strongly agree with this statement. Take a job interview for example. If two people walked in for a job interview, one very clean and the other not clean and wearing shabby clothes, both possessing the same qualities needed for the job, which would you hire? Or take house-hunting as another example. Would you move into an old rundown apartment that has visible dirt, grim and mold throughout it or would you move into one that you can practically eat off the floor of? IV. Social Values of Contemporary Americans
“They like a good family person”
This sounds like the all American dream to me! Of course I think everyone should be able to marry the love of their life, have children and love and educate them, sacrifice for their family, support and honor your mother and father in old age and own a home that can be passed down through generations through time. Unfortunately, this does not happen for a lot of Americans. Some are raised in broken or abusive homes and know no other way to be so when they become older brokenness and abuse is all they know. Some marry just for money. Some have children and just walk away from them. Some put their parents in nursing homes and just forget about them because they don’t want to feel burdened. We have women now believing that they don’t need a man to have a family! Being that they are so successful with their job, money, home and transportation they figure who needs the headache of having a man around. They just go and get artificially inseminated and then are done with it not thinking or maybe not even caring when this child grows up, are they going to ask who their father
is. V. Political Value of Contemporary Americans
“They believe the government is naturally inefficient”
I feel that the government is one big wasteful program and inefficient at getting stuff done either by wasting a lot of money or being extremely slow at what it does. The government is like a thief and a politician meaning it sometimes spends money on itself and sometimes it spends its money on others. Like the thief, the government is not careful in how much it spends because after all it’s not his money. The same goes for the politician and they certainly are not careful in how the money is being spent because it is being spent on others. The government is very irresponsible with its spending habits. VI. Religious Values of Contemporary Americans
“Americans believe that there is life after death”
I do believe that there is life after death. What I don’t believe (from what I was taught) is that the spirit leaves the body and immediately goes to heaven or hell. I was taught that the spirit is merely that breath that God gave you and when you die it will be returned back unto him. As for life after death, your body being in its final resting place which is your grave will be risen on the day Jesus returns, both saved and the lost (Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.” John 5:28, 29
