Through the use of Stress Diathesis Theory
Johnson’s (2000) journal article, “Differences Among Families Coping With Serious
Mental Illness: A Qualitative Analysis”, compellingly brings to light areas in need of further research in relation to how mental illness is perceived, coped with, and influenced by family members. Research moved public perception from a deterministic point of “familial etiology” to the further developed “stressdiathesis theory” (SDT) (Johnson, 2000). The latter of the two, as noted by Zubin (1986) (as cited in Johnson, 2000, p. 126) places emphasis on the combination of biological susceptibility combined with environmental and psychological factors being at fault for an individual’s inability to manage stress effectively, as opposed to stress being the cause, or driving force, of the illness. This revelation by Coyne, Down (1991) and Goldstein (1987) (as cited in Johnson,
2000, p. 126) suggested that by tweaking aspects of psychosocial and environmental functioning, individuals and families could aid in healthy management of the illness (Johnson, 2000).
I believe Johnson (2000) uses SDT to provide reasoning for varying coping strategies and how they are influenced by the proficiency of mental healthcare professionals tasked with providing adequate education to family members of these individuals.
