Thesis: We should raise the speed limits on our National Interstate System.
Objection to thesis: Speeding causes more property damage, casualties and fatalities.
1. Cars are much more efficient now then even ten years ago. A. Automobile manufacturers are constantly working on raising engine efficiency. B. The VQ35DE motor in my 2004 350Z has 287 horsepower, through engineering and technology advancements, by 2008 that motor gained 19 horsepower. (UA: vehicles are made to travel faster with more power and more efficiency.) 2. Vehicles traveling at sustained highway speed emit less harmful emission than they do in slower stop and go traffic. A. The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Regulates fuel economy for auto manufactures, in 1978 the requirement was 18 MPG in 2012 it was 30.2 and will reach 35.5 by 2016. This is a Government requirement for automakers to achieve this MPG rating averaged out across their model line. B. The highway MPG for vehicles is more than 1/3 more than the city MPG. (UA: vehicle produce less harmful emissions at highway speeds) 3. The Interstate Roadway System was designed to be traveled at higher speed, the slow arcing curves and the long straightaway's are designed for speed. A. The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 established our Interstate Roadway System. Designed with safety and high traveling speeds as paramount concerns. B. The states must follow the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, which requires engineering processes, to receive funding for their roadways (UA: roadways are designed to be safe at increased speeds) 4. The safety features on new vehicles far surpass those of older vehicles. A. Safety regulations and features have improved dramatically. B. In 1966 seatbelts were required to be installed in vehicles. In 1984 mandatory seatbelt laws were enacted. C. We are mandated to have airbags lining the insides of our vehicles, lane intrusion sensing
