Thief Of Always Quotes
The Thief of Always by Clive Barker is about Harvey Swick who entered a house of holidays run by a powerful being called Hood, he quickly discovers the house’s dark secrets. In this essay I will talk about the roles that Hood’s minions play in the book. There are 4 main minions that Hood controls, Rictus, Marr, Jive, and Carna, in this essay I won’t talk about Carna. I think Hood’s minions advance the plot a lot. I will tell you about the roles that Rictus, Marr, and Jive play in the book. Hood’s minion Rictus plays a big role in the story. Rictus says that questions are bad for everyone, so that Harvey doesn’t question the Holiday House. When Harvey is first leaving his home to go with Rictus, Rictus says, “‘No questions, boy!’ … ’Questions …show more content…
Jive is the persuader of the story, and persuades Harvey in the story. When Rictus is first taking Harvey to the holiday house, Rictus says, “‘I'm not here to do a great song and dance persuading you. I got a friend called Jive does that’“ (7). I think that Rictus talks like that to use reverse psychology on Harvey. He does this by saying that he doesn’t persuade people to come to the holiday house, he just smiles. But in doing this he has given us a clue that Jive persuades people. Jive persuades Harvey to bite Wendell. When Harvey was in front of Wendell scaring him, Jive says, “‘I'm not here to do a great song and dance persuading you. I got a friend called Jive does that’“ ( 7 ). I think that Rictus talks like that to use reverse psychology on Harvey. He does this by saying that he doesn’t persuade people to come to the holiday house, he just smiles. But in doing this he has given us a clue that Jive persuades people. Jive persuades Harvey to bite Wendell. When Harvey was in front of Wendell scaring him, Jive says, "’Go on. Drink a little of his blood. Why not? The fat's no good, but the blood's hot, the blood's tasty’"(47). I think that Jive tries to persuade Harvey to drink Wendells blood because then Harvey would become a ‘vampire’ like Hood. This would allow Hood to influence Harvey to stay with him. Overall Jive plays a big role in the story by being the persuader of the

This Passage reminds me of the similar situation that has happened to Liesel when her younger brother, Werner, died suddenly during their trip to Germany. Similarly, Arthur Berg is also going through this situation, but with his sister dying in his arms. Also, when death, the narrator says that he "could sense [that] he would hold her for hours," it reminds me of Liesel shaking his brother as she doesn’t believe that he is dead. (Zusak 167) As well, these passage allows the reader to understand that death can arrive at anytime, leaving their loved ones in sorrow, which is also one of theme that is revealed through this piece of…

The word harpoon came up so many times in three pages. I know that this is important because I know something is going to happen very shortly. I know it is going to be shortly because I'm getting to the end of the book.…

As we all know, in the book, Brian is stranded in the middle of a Canadian forest due to a plane crash. Now, Brian is alone in the forest with just his hatchet. Let’s say that later in the story brian finds a survival kit in the forest. Here is what I would put in a survival bag for the situation that Brian is in at this moment. Firstly, I would put fishing bait because two of the best survival foods are berries which Brian already has because of all the berry trees and fish.…

When Rictus first meets Harvey at his house, he doesn’t support questioning. When Rictus is leaving Harvey’s house after their first talk, Rictus hollers back, “Questions rot the mind!” he hollered as he went. “Keep your mouth shut and we’ll see what comes your way!” (9). Questions are implied as “rotting the mind” and you wonder at the beginning, “What do you mean!?!?” In the end , questions actually strengthen the mind, completely contradicting what Jive, Rictus, Marr, and Mr.Hood support which is that “Questions rot the mind.” We can infer that the reason that questions are bad, is that if you keep asking them, you’ll find what you’re looking for. Hints are laid about the power of questions.Mrs. Griffin, when she is persuaded by Harvey to tell some of the truth that they are trapped here, she says “Now listen to me Harvey. I’ve seen many children come and go through this House-some of them foolish, some of them selfish, some sweet, some brave-but you, you are one of the brightest souls I have ever set eyes on. I want you to take what joy you can from being from being here. Use the hours well, because there’ll be fewer than you think.”(96-97). Even though this is not a question, it still gives many clues to why Harvey is a “bright soul”.She specifically says” you are one of the brightest sould I have ever set eyes on”. From the rest of the book and Wendell, you see that questions…

There is a place where the government controls everyone's life, where the government uses drugs to manipulate the people's thoughts. In this place there is no such thing as a family, there is no such thing as love. They teach young children that their body is not theirs, and that it belongs to everyone and anyone who wants to use it. This place is Huxley's predicted of the future. Huxley wrote his prediction in the book Brave New World, written in 1932 and is eerily similar to present day and even more similar to our up and coming future. The direction we are heading towards as of right now is similar to the Brave New World, although we will never fully be like the brave new world. Our evolution of families, amount of divorces, and amount…
