As a student, it is always my mother’s interest to know how to help me achieve higher results by remembering more information related to exams. When it comes to the ability to remember, we should talk about ‘memory’. Memory is the nervous system’s capacity to retain and receive knowledge and skills; this system includes three main stages, which are encoding, storage and retrieval (Gazzaniga , Heatherton. & Halpern, 2013).
Actually, there are three types of memory, which are sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory. Yet, only the long-term memory is significantly important in preparing an exam. Long-term memory has almost unlimited capacity and last permanently, but it needs retrieval cues in order to retrieve information stored in long-term memory (Gazzaniga , Heatherton. & Halpern, 2013). The mechanism of long –term memory have two main types of memories , which are implicit memory and explicit memory(Gazzaniga , Heatherton. & Halpern, 2013) .The explicit memory is that the memories wen need to remember and recall it both consciously. Inside explicit memory , semantic memory represents the concepts, meaning and knowledge of actual facts (Gazzaniga , Heatherton. & Halpern, 2013).
We should ask, how can we improve our long-term memory? The answer is Mnemonics. Mnemonics are ways that use different kinds of retrieval cues in pursue of helping people remember items (Gazzaniga , Heatherton. & Halpern, 2013). The method of loci is one of Mnemonics. Let me introduce how to use the method of loci. First , user should imagine a location where user is familiar with in user’s mind , such as house or working office ; Second , user can associate the things he need to memorize with the items inside the imaginary house in user’s mind ; Finally , when user want to remember the thing , user could visualize his house and then receive the information by walking and seeing the items in the house mentally (Biane, 1986).
