Circular Narrative in Three Day Road
In the novel 3 day road there are various variations of characters
Throughout the book there are several variations of characters witnessing their acquaintances going through trauma & selfhood or in fact being the one under going these traits. For instance Xavier was the lead narrator for the story, he was also a cree soldier who fought for Canada during world war 1. Just like most soldiers after war, they need something to help them cope after witnessing all the gruesome experiences of war. Xavier used morphine to help him manage with killing elijah and life after war. The narration from the point of view from Xavier influences the themes of trauma and selfhood because we are able to view him from 2 perspectives, one being mental and one being physical. Xavier says “All winter I have suffered inexplicable suffering with a miserable thing called depression. My mind could not focus in the field, and I could not shake it.” (Boyden 233). This quote shows how Xavier felt in the war and how it ultimately lead to his melancholy, he also tells us that he cannot focus and that his mind is always wandering, and he could never shake it off. Morphine is a drug that is a painkiller that you can get addicted to very easily. Xavier and Elijah knew of another soldier who was addicted to Morphine, he was known as Grey Eyes, “When Grey Eyes takes a lot of it, he lies like he is dead until I worry he has joined them. He doesn’t always take enough that he goes unconscious.” (Boyden 80). This quote shows the power of Morphine and the effect it has on the human body and how it makes you seem dead. One of the many side effects of morphine is depression (Morphine and Depression - from FDA reports) . Xavier uses the morphine in denial
