Three Different Spectrums Of The Family

Cohen provides three different spectrums of family change in the text. The idea of change comes in many varieties and is often closely associated with a groups political viewpoint. The spectrum ranges from those who are staunchly opposed to change in any form, to the group that believes that change is imperative and must occur at all costs. The poll conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2010, indicate a relatively even distribution. However, the results seemed to present a pattern based on individual belief characteristics often associated with political ideologies. The findings were broken into three categories; conservative, liberal and critical.

The big topics impact the well-being of the family include finances and time. Both of these issues can be linked back to hot button topics such as domestic and family violence. When we begin to look back at topics such as partner violence, we must search for the causation. As the bread primary “breadwinner” in the relationship, does the stress of this new role push one partner past their breaking point? Women are unable to leave battering relationships due to the inability to survive financially without a supplemental income (asking for it). I would hypothesize that the financial turmoil of marriage and family is a large contributor to the causation. I believe that implementing a scaled tax shelter would allow additional funds to be diverted to the establishment of the family as they slowly embraced their new relationship. It could be tied to education and investment benchmarks that would promote strong a stronger relationship foundation.
