The 2 main posterior muscles in the lower leg are the Gastrocnemius and soleus which form the calf muscles. These muscles attach with the Achilles tendon. There are also the muscles which run deeper within the leg – posterior tibial, long toe flexor muscles, extensor digitorum longus and extensor hallucis longus.
There are 2 lateral muscles; Peroneus brevis and Peroneus longus, both found on
the side of the lower leg. The brevis muscle is lower down the leg than the longus muscle, nearer to the ankle.
