Tiger Mountain Forest: A Short Story
These woods, they’re not normal. Something is off about this place, and I can’t figure out what. I’ve lived in Washington for all my life, and I never thought the Tiger Mountain Forest would be this creepy. I live on my own, and there are things here that attack me. The only things that don’t hurt me are the voices, I don’t know where they come from, but they’ve been with me for years, even before I started living here. Life here isn’t the best, each day is a fight for food, for water, and for sanity. But it is a lot better than my old life.
Before I came to the woods I lived with my family, I had a dad, Marcus, a mom, Amanda, and a little brother, Jayden. I had a terrible life, school was torture, everywhere I went there was somebody waiting to hurt me,

My slight hesitation causes the coyote to leap forward and dig its teeth into my left leg, ripping apart my flesh, its teeth hitting my bone. I cry out in pain, falling over, I hear someone say to start hitting the coyote if I want to live, I hear someone else saying it would be better to die. I listen to the second voice, and I let the coyote start eating my flesh.
The pain becomes excruciating, and then the pain suddenly stops, as I lay on the ground,
I think I am dead, but when I open my eyes I realize I’m still in the forest, and I look over at my leg, and the coyote is gone, there are no bite marks to be found. I stand up, and look around to try to find the reason to the coyotes disappearance. I find nothing, and keep foraging.
I hear the sound of something running, it isn’t gracious like an animals, meaning it must be a person. I hide near some large bushes and trees, hoping the thing doesn’t notice me. “I know you’re hiding there.” The person says, walking in my direction. I leave my hiding spot to look who found me, and he looks like my brother, yet a lot older. “You really let go of yourself,

Ask for help, something. But no comprehensible words seemed to be escaping my mouth. After equally mumbled dialogue from the intoxicated man I assumed he would offer no aid. Just as the same as I wished someone would appear, I now wished this drunk of a person would go away. Once he did it was just me, the alley, and the coat on my back.…

I could hear the blood pumping in my ears, away from the situation, and I started calming my breathing. I headed back to camp, content with trying to forget what I heard. The heavy footsteps of a creature larger than simple game. Almost as though just hiding from me, either to prepare to pounce, or to hide. What bothered me most however, was not that it was seemingly a creature who just wanted to hide, but that it hid. It sounded like a large creature, but a deer would have run, and a wolf would attack, followed by others. What was that? As I reached the campsite, the flames of my fire were softly dancing as though doing a waltz. I checked all of camp, but all the food and supplies I had gathered were gone. I headed back into the woods to the spot where I heard the rustle of leaves. The forest was still unsettlingly still, so I made the point to make my presence be known. I searched for any signs of where my belongings could have ended up. I stumbled upon a skinned deer. With that I knew I was not alone. I searched further, and found the hide on the ground near the river. I lifted it, wondering why any creature would skin a deer just to leave the hide behind not too far…

My owner is dead. I am alone now, left to face the frigid temperatures alone. The trail is long ahead, I just want to go to bed, but I can’t. The struggle is real, I cannot feel my paws nor see them under the powder snow. I keep moving, looking, and searching for a place to go; a place of warmth. The man can no longer make a fire for me to keep warm, and I am a dog that is acclimated to being warm. I have got to keep moving ahead and never tire. The obstacles ahead are going to be difficult to overcome. Backing down is not an option, doing what I have to do to survive is what I will do. You have no clue quitting is not in my vocabulary.…

Don’t get me started on spiders. I absolutely hate spiders. In the whole wide world there as nothing other than spiders that I hate the most (apart from cockroaches a course). Spiders terrify me just by looking at them from a distance. They are these horrible, hairy bloodsucking creatures. Despite being a huge animal lover (meaning that I like mainly dogs, cats, etc.) I never have or ever will like spiders. They just make my skin crawl every time I see them. I could even be a pitch black in a room but I can feel the presence of an unwanted horrible animal. One day while I was at home I couldn’t believe it when I found a massive spider in the living room…..…

Before I could answer, I was back at home. I was in my bed wearing my pajamas, and the clock said it was midnight, like nothing had happened at all that night. I wasn’t even hungry anymore. Even the bite on my right calf wasn’t there anymore. I was so scared the next few weeks that I barely talked or left my room, I didn’t tell anyone about what had happened. I spent hours and days thinking about whether this was real or not.…
