Tim Burton's Cinematic Techniques
Tim Burton is an amazing author, producer, artist, and animator. Although he has many things on his plate, he’s also an extraordinary director. Many of his films were nominated to get awards, and many of them got awards. So as you can see, he is a very successful man.
It wasn’t easy though. Part of why Burton created amazing films was because of the cinematic techniques he used in them. A cinematic technique Burton uses is sound/music. The purpose of sound and music is to express characters feelings through the sound and music. An example of sound/music is in the movie “Edward Scissorhands”, Edward is outside cutting and shaping an ice angel. While he is cutting it, he is creating snow and Kim comes out to see. Both high-key and low-key lighting were used in the movie “Edward Scissorhands” to create a joyful and happy mood but also a sad and depressed mood. For example, when Edward is at his castle the lighting is low-key to create a mood. But, when Edward is at Peg’s families house, the lighting is high-key to create more of a happier mood. Another example is in the movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, Tim Burton again uses lighting to create a certain kind of mood. In the scene, the children are all waiting outside to go inside the factory, where the lighting is low-key and gloomy but when they go inside the lighting changes and so does the mood. The lighting gets brighter, the mood gets lifted and the scene gets colorful. A third cinematic technique Burton uses are camera angles.
In the movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, the kids enter the candy room. In that scene, Burton shows different high angles of the setting which creates mood and tone because it shows the beautiful scenery of all the delicious candy in the room. Another example is in the movie “Edward Scissorhands”, Burton uses an eye level camera angle to show the feelings of different characters, such as Kim and Edward. He uses closeups to show their facial expression so you can tell how they are feelings. In conclusion, Tim Burton creates amazing films because of the use of cinematic techniques.
