This novel is very different from the others that I have read. Tim O’Brien wrote this book to show how it was at Vietnam and what soldiers have to go thru. However he wrote this book under the genre of fiction because this way he could write things that were not true and still make it billable to the reader. Rather than him just saying things as they are. Perhaps if he told things as they really happen then the reader might not be interested of what was going on. Now the author wrote this book for two reasons.…

Profiles In Courage is a book that focuses on the adversity that very few United States Senators have been willing to deal with in order to cultivate their ideas of better democracy. The story starts out with Bowker saying “the lake had drowned his friend, Max Arnold,” (132) and that he feels weird driving around the lake once again because “now Max was just an idea”(133). The event of his friend drowning in the lake makes Bowker feel detached with his hometown because now it is as if he is back in Vietnam, since he lost such a close friend there too. When Bowker says Max is just an idea this solidifies the notion that he feels alone in his town due to the lack of old friends he can talk or hangout with. Also, Bowker cannot seem to get away from Vietnam. Everything he sees around the lake subtly hints to his time there. While driving, he observes two young boys “hiking with knapsacks and toy rifles and canteens” (133). Bowker uses allegory of two young boys playing soldier to revert back to his own experience in the war. He observes these two boys playing soldier and tries acquiring their attention, “He honked going by, but neither boy looked up” (133). When none of them look up, even when he passed by multiple times, this symbolizes how Bowker’s life playing soldier is over. Now it is time to move on, but he cannot which emphasizes the detachment he feels towards his…

When he tells his father, his father responds, “There is no one to see.” The father than states that, “they must go now”. The boy gets very upset and the father questions, “Do you want to die? Is that what you want?” When the boy responds, “I don’t care,” the father gets upset and expresses to the boy that he, “musn’t say that” (McCarthy 85). This is a primary example of the father reassuring the boy still has hope. The father not only makes sure the boy has hope, he also tries to give the boy hope. He gives the boy hope by telling them they are not going to die soon. This is proven in the novel when the boy asks, “Are we going to die” and the man says, “Sometime. Not…

Guilt is not a simple feeling but is a past event attached with a lesson in a person’s life. In the short story “Turkle” by David Carpenter, Elmer the farmer felt tremendous guilt after he told his wife, Elsie that he would be taking the children to school no matter the weather. This foolish action not only put his three children in danger but himself as well, resulting in the four almost all losing their lives.…

The reader can find repetition everywhere with each story that Finkel shares. One constantly reads about how Adam Schumann always tastes his partner’s blood, or how Tausolo Aieti cannot remember things, but it all has a purpose. If thought about, the repetition signifies just how often these events play out in the mentally wounded soldiers’ minds. With some support, maybe we could make the “coming home” part of war something our troops actually enjoy. Tausolo Aieti who was blown up constantly goes to see his case manager, and at this point in the book, he’s onto his third. The lady now destined to determine his future says to him “This is my purpose in your life. I am like your mom” (Finkel 198). Maybe that is what our veterans need, that professional figure in their life always there for them, guiding them on each step until they can return back to civilian…

Surviving the war wasn’t as an accomplishment as everyone thought. Jimmy Cross figured it out the hard way. Norman Bowker was a man who represents the damage that a war leaves in a soldier after the war . Norman Bowker’s sorrow and confusion are so powerful that they prompt him to drive without direction around his hometown in “Speaking of Courage”.Bowker also wrote a seventeen-page letter to Tim O’Brien explaining how he never felt right after the war in and to hang himself at the end of the chapter.…
